Payment Options

I am new to the forum ( although I have been a contributor to a pentax forum in another place for some years). I am toying with the idea of possibly selling a lens to finance another and selling via this forum has the advantage on not incurring ebay fees. I was wondering how payments are handled. In person is of course OK if buyer and seller are not at opposite ends of the country. Paypal is I believe possible provided both buyer and seller have accounts. Otherwise one falls back on cheques which means working on trust if there is to be prompt despatch of the goods. I guess it must work pretty well as I have seen no complaints posted!
Any enlightenment would be much appreciated

Your other option is direct bank transfer

No matter how many lenses I have owned - I have always needed just one more

Thanks very much for that - I never thought of that as I have never used it but that has to be the answer I guess.

A buyer doesn't have to have a Paypal account, they can purchase from a seller (that does) with a credit card.

Due to Paypal fees it is still cheaper to use bank transfer but you may find that as a new member prospective buyers will be a bit wary of you and prefer Paypal due to the payment protection.

Thanks Mike - I had forgotten that and I guess that wariness cuts both ways. I am fortunate in having a solid ebay record but as you say I would start afresh here. Many thanks

I usually send a cheque and accept that there'll be a delay while it clears. (You'll note that I tend to buy more often than I sell...) Probably the best thing is to give people the choice: paypal (plus fees), bank transfer or cheque (with delay).

Many thanks for reply.A choice might well be the answer, although my gut feeling is that Paypal could well be the simplest way. I will now give some thought as to whether I go ahead with selling the lens in question!

I've sold two or three lenses. Painful experience...

Yes I suspect that you might be right as sharing both your account number and name could be a problem if the person involved had evil intent - so if I decide to sell my lens, I shall probably stipulate Paypal or cheque.

I assume that you have had a painful experience. Was it when using the Classified section on this forum?

I have bought and sold quite a number of items using the Classified section here and I must say I have experienced no problems using Bank Transfer which has the great benefit of speed now that the major banks have got their act together with faster payments. I do prefer to deal with people who have a bit of a track record of postings.

Yes, those pesky people with evil intent may try to deposit money in my account without me knowing.

Unless they have more information having a name and account number is pretty much harmless .. the only problem I can see is if the seller doesn't send the item and the buyer hasn't made sure he has the FULL details and verified them (name, address, home phone number).

All the information required for a bank transfer is written on the cheque anyway,so where is the risk??:

Mike - you know more about this than I do, so I stand corrected!
