I've seen so many flat and lack-lustre images of this wonderful bridge that I was tempted not to open the post for fear of yet more disappointment

Glad I didn't let my prejudices get the better of me, as it really does do the subject justice, IMHO, and I really like the way the pomp and splendour of the bridge in the foreground has been set against the simple lines of the dwelling, built from similar stone, I should imagine, seen nestling between the trees in the background. Decision to go with B&W a wise choice, as, for me at least, the image just wouldn't have the same impact in colour.

I should never have doubted you, Andrew

Best wishes,

Jon

Lovely shot Andrew and a nice conversion. Almost looks like you shot it on film...

Thanks folks. It was a perfect morning for this site which can be a bit awkward. I've tried twice before without much success.

Film? What's that, Kris? Oh yes, I remember. Enprints, smelly darkrooms, Boots the Chemist, stop bath, fixer...
Best wishes,

Andrew

I love the smell of fixer in the morning, it smells like... well very nasty stuff.

Nice image, but the highlights on the building look a bit blown to me....are they rescuable? I think a bit more detail in the stonework would improve this shot a lot.

Very well observed. I went back to the shot and checked the levels: the graph was perfect with highlights just right but using Shadow/Highlights adjustment brought back lots of detail in the stonework. Of course, if I was a truly dedicated photographer and shot it in RAW (which I never do) then there would have been even more detail!
Best wishes,

Andrew
