painting with light

While we're on the subject of long exposures, is it ever possible to damage the camera (sensor or suchlike) by doing really long exposures? - I'm talking 10 minutes plus here. I have a vague recollection of someone once saying it could overheat, but have no idea if that's true!

Would there be a problem if the battery ran out while the shutter was open?

Thanks

the shutter will close when the battery runs out.

Overheating? errr... no. You'll probably get more thermal noise in warm climes with 30C, but if you're like me and want 3 hours, then you'll need a PSU and colder weather.

We overheated a 7D with 35+ and constant filming.

Cheers for the info Bret.

You lost me with the PSU though, what's one of those?

I have done a B setting on my K10D for 90minutes followed by 90 minute dark frame subtraction - and it didn't damage the sensor! (It was powered by mains adapter)

Wowzers, those blue trees near the bottom are incredible!
I know, I'd be terrible, one slip of the torch and oops start again
Torch? The grown ups prefer to play with "frickin lasers"...
