Tim,
The second shot seems to have better light - it shows the owl off well, and takes the eye away from the background a bit (maybe a tighter, portrait crop?) . Focus is spot on with 1 and 2.

These were all with the Tamron 17-50.
The owls were in a sort of enclosure with fence panels on 3 sides so it was difficult to get a decent background. I might have a go at removing that fence in the 2nd one.

I had a go at blurring the background on number 2, I think it worked quite well!

Great shots of a European Long Eared Owl. This is not a 'resident' of the UK but can be found in the UK wild, (escapees et). There is one around the Hull area, south of the Bridge. It is also quite 'tame' having been a captive bird. Responds well to 'titbits' and masses of patience from the person taking the shots.
