Outer Hebrides - Infra Red

Posted 04/06/2018 - 20:29 Link
Hi all... a final selection from my trip up to Barra and Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides back in February... all taken one very beautiful morning on the beach at Traigh Eais. A trip which will stay with me for a very long time... All with my IR converted K5, Sigma 10-20 (the widest APSC lens I have which can cope with IR)...

I really like No.4 Bill followed by No.8.

If i'm honest the close up of the sand-dune grasses don't really have as much appeal...less of a pronounced IR effect compared to a normal mono.

Out of interest what wavelength did you have it converted to and are you pleased you made the right choice? Would you change to a different wavelength if you could do it again?

I like the idea of an IR conversion myself but it will have to wait until after I upgrade my camera and i've no real idea how to choose the right conversion.

Regards

Karlo

Yes, sensational images as always Bill... But do you always have to go so far and remote ? Are you just "Billy no mates"...?

Quite an atmospheric set, again. I really like that the IR effect seems so subtly natural - I'm perceiving these as beautiful monochrome landscapes, not as a showcase for what an IR conversion can do (well, maybe #8 would be the exception here).

All the grass images in particuliar resonate within - I can feel how I would have felt had I been there.

Many thanks for la beauté et le voyage intérieur...

There's a raw intensity to these images, combining the IR effect and the utter crispness that only digital can do. They evoke feeling, and photography becomes art.
Best regards, John

Nos 1 & 4 for me, although I do like the 'grasses only' as well. As John says;

Savage.
I have shot a fair bit of IR, but nothing at this level.
I always look forward to meandering through your images, as there is a depth to them that I know is lacking in mine.
1 and 4 shine for me
I know what i like, If not always why.

Thanks Karlo, Stuart, Serge, John, Andy, Derek, Defragged, lrek, Gary for taking the time and trouble to comment on these...

Karlo, I did a standard 720nm conversion with ACS in Norfolk, and am really happy with it... ACS are gt in my experience (very happy to talk through the various options etc)... be prepared for a bit of a wait over summer though, when they’re vbusy... check out these guys to get a gd idea of the range of options re filters etc...

Stuart, gd point you make re remoteness etc... I really enjoy being in the great outdoors, hanging out with mother nature... some of the time... my mindfulness, if you like... something I’ve always done (with or without a camera)... I tend to find that the more remote the place (often, though not always) the purer and more rewarding the experience... and (often, though not always) the deeper and more reflective the photographs (although the photographs are by no means the sole reason for doing it in the first place)... no right or wrong, each to their own etc, just something that works for me...

Derek, love your IR work and look forward to seeing some more of it over the summer...

Serge, John, Andy, Defragged, lrek, Gary, a big thank you for kind words and gd to hear the images have landed in some way on the emotional front...

Thanks again all...

Best

These are glorious, I think the subject matter suits IR particularly well. I can't pick a favourite, they're all great.
