It's the side lighting and the jagged textures it reveals that makes these. Probably this sort of image is stronger when the "perspective compression" from a farther distance position can be emphasised and the haze and sky cropped out. (Did you notice me get that right, the bit about the perspective ...? ! ....see, I didn't say it was from the longer focal length ...!)

Nice little set! Nos 1 & 3 for me; especially the compressed perspective of no 3 - and you have chosen a really good composition IMO

Thank you all for your comments. The natural highs and lows in the landscape are one of the things that make this part of the world interesting to me. (Another is the contrast emphasised by the close proximity of industrial, agricultural, livestock and residential land in comparative harmony.)
Even though I have lived here most of my life, it's only since getting more interested in photography that I've seen how these highs and lows can impact on images in different ways, particularly by showing the layers pointed out by Bill and Mike which add depth to the shot.
Nigel, the phrase "perspective compression" was not one I was previously familiar with (though I've now read up a bit about it). When you say "Probably this sort of image is stronger when ....", did you mean "The image would be stronger IF ....." or "The image is stronger BECAUSE ...."?
