I think it is punishing you for using your daughter's Christmas present.
I suggest you take it back to the shop, and ask for a replacement, plus one for yourself.

When I turn it on it shows all the modes that I am in but the screen is black. I can press the button and 'take' a 'black' picture and then delete it.
Having looked at troubleshooting I cannot find anything to give me a clue.
Do you think it is something that I have done?
