I believe that some brands have an "open" firmware, Canon I believe was one of them.
There are some interesting custom firmware for Canon cameras, there was one that enables you too record the live view, so you basically get a video mode
If pentax would make their firmware more accessible, their might be done things to the firmware that Pentax don't like but some ideas or approaches to a solution might be interesting for them and help them develop better firmware and there for working cameras.

A little bit more interesting for us here, I remember a post on the dutch forum of someone install K20D firmware on a K10D.
He explained the progressed a little bit but only can remember that the camera must be in debug mode.
The K10D with the K20D firmware worked according to him but some features didn't work properly.

(They could probably improve on the lenses immediately! LOL!)
It's an interesting idea... would be nice if Pentax could go that route (after all they did with the DNG format), rather than people having to do things like "Pentax-Hack"
