On the Road - Structures

Posted 09/09/2018 - 20:50 Link
Hi all... as I mentioned a while back, I've been on the move, touring, with the day job for a while now (the past year and a half pretty much, with a fair amount more on the cards to come). This tends to mean a different town/city every week. Whilst this has impacted a fair amount on the kinds of places I would generally choose to spend time in with a camera (the coast, moors, back of beyond etc.), I have really enjoyed the sensory impact of arriving in a new place every week, and the rather random element of whatever happens to catch your eye. Over the summer, I've finally had a chance to sit down and sort through pretty much a year and a half's worth of images, and put some of the shots together in hopefully what are some kind of coherent themes. I posted some shots of some theatres, trees and nighttime shots a while back. So... here are some of what I've loosely called "structures"... I would've called them "buildings", only a couple of them aren't... all Pentax K1 and various lenses, inc DFA 24-70, FA 24-90, F 17-28, PLM 55-300.

Interesting set, I particularly like graphic compositions of 2, 3 & 6, finding these seems to be your forte. A touch of Martin Parr’s The Last Resort to the seaside ones, Rhyl looks particularly uninviting!

Great set. You certainly have the eye for shapes and lines. The first three stand out for me Bill.

Amazing set of images. I particularly like #8 which has a dynamic quality that I like.

Superb Vision, Composition and Processing - the slightly "muted" colours on some of these suits them so well - another great set

Yeah, I rather like no 7, even though it does, for some reason, put me in mind of some of Martin Parr's pictures!
SteveH!

Some people call me 'strange'.
I prefer 'unconventional'.
But I'm willing to compromise and accept 'eccentric'.

I'm more drawn to the tones and textures, the slightly faded, retro feel, and the matter of factness, than I am to the layouts and framings. We clearly have a different set of priorities when in comes to composition.

I can't get away from the sense of things being cut off (or should that be "half seen"?!)

It's a thoughtful and personal portrayal of the places, a strong set.

Bill

Your creative eye never lets you down. It's always a pleasure to see your images. Keep 'em coming, whatever the subject

I like this kind of stuff, and have had a bit of a go at similar stuff in the past. Like RobL, I think 2, 3 and 6 work very well.

Well , bits of my abstract pyramids were cut off as well, you no doubt remember, so I can hardly speak anyway! I will try and think about this more with some city/street shots and try showing more limited elements of the subjects, as an experiment inspired by your style here.

1, 4 and 9 work best for me - they offer a different view, surely! Also they, to me, feel the most "alive", each for different reasons.

Cambridge simply has so much movement that the buildings feel alive; it's a very intriguing impression. Blackpool works not only thanks to the gull, but also thanks to the elevator hung in time between stories.
And Belfast's spire, quite elegantly, aspires - alive indeed!

Thanks Nigel and Serge... yes, thoroughly enjoyed your pyramids Nigel... look forward to some more experimenting... Serge, thanks for spotting the elevator/lift... was building a composition around it, when the gull flew into frame... all rather serendipitous, as these things often are...

Thanks and best
