I think a tighter crop might help.
I would crop almost upto the main chimney on the building, with a similar amount off the right hand side and a bit off the bottom.

Agree with the left side cropping. It's the large expanse of empty concrete, it doesn't add anything for me. Ditto for the lowest 100 pixels or so of water.
I think it's still missing something though. I'm not sure which part of the image to focus on. In my opinion the signs don't tell enough of a story to warrant inclusion.

But that sign isn't sharp and it's the first thing me eye rests on. Nor indeed are the distant houses unduly sharp and they are the second thing. In fact the second shot isn't as sharp as the first or are my old eyes failing me?

I resized the image after the crop, I think thats why it is not as sharp.

I don't (think I) lose quality when I crop but then I always work from a RAW/PSD file not JPEG.
I think it's the saving that does the harm with JPEG quality with its repeated application of compression.

So in summary cropping will only impact on the quality of a JPEG on save where compression is applied to an already compressed image.
Resizing may require some unsharp mask to retain sharpness but will suffer when the JPEG is save just the same as save with no resize.
I may be wrong but I thought it was the repeated application of the JPEG compression algorithm that degraded the quality of JPEG images even when no resizing was applied.
I would be interested to hear JRs thoughts as someone who shoots JPEG all the time.

I looks like Colin has cropped the already-resized (800px) original image and then enlarged the cropped part to 800px. That is why it has gone blurry. Colin you should crop from the original full-size photo, then resize that crop to post on this forum. It shouldn't be blurry at all.
Mike, re-saving JPEGS does indeed degrade the quality as it is going through a lossy compression each time you save. However I would expect that you have to resave an image dozens, if not hundreds, of times before you'd notice any serious degradation in quality.

The location is about 120 miles away, I will be in the same area next year so will have a look at the possibilities then.

I cropped the resized image instead of working with the original one, to late at night must engage brain before working on photos.
