Brian, I like the composition of the second shot, but the dull flat light is not being helpful to your image. Perhaps it might add interest if you remove most of the grey sky and some of the left hand side, and increase the contrast and saturation of the remainder, e.g.-

Slightly better would have been to be standing or holding the camera a little higher up and get some more sea above the last/right hand post and then to crop down to the horizon which would remove the distracting line.
