Omeone watching over me?

So anyway ... 9 days ago a lens was put on Ebay that I have wanted for a long long time for a buy it now price of £490 or starting price of £350. This lens is brand new and the Ebay seller is Warehouse Express .. the asking price is actually about right but the lens in question is no longer made and very hard to find now so after checking my card balance I went back on Ebay to buy it and found someone had put a bid on for £350

I put a bid on myself for £360 so that I was winning and then set up an automated snipe on a bidding service I use for a maximum of £490 and forgot about it .. in the knowledge that I was either going to get it for their original price, a bit cheaper or someone else was going to pay over the odds.

Anyway, yesterday was the last day so I checked an hour before and someone else had put a bid on and was winning at £370 but I checked my snipe was still there (which it was) so I was happy in the knowledge that unless it went mad in the last 60 seconds (quite usual) I stood a good chance of winning with my maximum of £490.

So the last 2 mins came .. I sat and watched it counting down .. still £370 .. my snipe will come in at the last 5 seconds ... 10 seconds and its still £370 .... 9,8.7,6,5, ... I am thinking now by bid should have gone in and when it updates I will be the winner ... 4,3,2,1, finish.

The auction updates and I got it for ..... well I didn't because the bloody sniper web page crashed around that time and didn't place the bid.



I was absolutely fuming ... if we had a cat it would probably be on it's way to the moon by now .. I swore, I sulked, I was not a happy bunny.

Anyway, just came in to find a second chance offer for my original £360 bid .. RESULT

Really makes me wish I had a UK address.

I was following that one myself, but decided I couldn't exactly sneak something that big under the domestic radar!

I got the highest bid on a DA-70 as well last night, but was under the reserve, and (so far) haven't had an offer to buy it, sadly...

I saw someone from Australia selling some very nice Pentax gear yesterday and have an inkling it was Clarky .. thought it was strange as it was DA* lenses and a K20D.

Lucky for me I had just sold the K20D .. easy come, easy go

I know of an online retailer with a used mint DA 70mm for £300 .. 6 months warranty .. if you are interested.

That's a superb buy. I wonder why all the big dealers
seem to give stuff away on ebay

sorry, over my budget level - I have a rule that I don't pay more than 50%-60% for second-hand prices. When you knock VAT off and factor-in the higher risk of getting an expensive lemon needing repairs, its not worth it...

I always work on the principle that as long as I can buy a lens .. use it for as long as I want and then when I come to sell I either get my money back or a profit then I am happy. 6 months warranty with a large retailer means you are unlikely to get a lemon needing repairs.
