Old vs New

The 40mm DA is a cracker and has become my 'walkabout' lens of choice. It has a funny eccentric lens hood with a screw in cap which takes 40.5mm filters! You can, of course, use 49mm filters in the conventional way. It is noticebly sharper than the original M series 40mm and all the M lenses are a pain to use on digital bodies anyway. I'd like to complement it with the 70MM. If you want to take discreet picures, the 40mm on a DS almost looks like a P&S.

Thank you that's just the sort of info I was hoping to get. At 40mm it is a bit longer than I'd wish but I think it's the cheapest toe in the water I can take with the Ltd lenses as well which is nice.

I think the small size is the only point in its favour. The 43mm is a better lens, in my view, and really quite cheap second-hand.

But I take your point about the angle of view. If I didn't have a 31mm Ltd, I would probably buy an FA 35mm.

Gol durnit I have just been looking at the 43 - the 31 seems a bit large. The 43 on the other hand seems fairly discrete but an even longer focal length.

I must check the s/h prices on both.

It's quite fun making non essential decisions like this!

I have had a quick rummage about and I can't seem to find any 43 or 31 for sale s/h - can you suggest where I might look?

That 35mm macro has my LBA churning inside I will put it in my watch list and talk myself out of it over the next week.

Martin, just on that 21mm, I got one for a song, but it was missing its Hood and lens cap, I managed to get a cap for it but i'm loathe to spend almost 50quid for a new hood, so i'm going to make one for it.

Do you use it more with the hood or without.

I plan to mill one out of some black plastic I have at work. If its no bother can you give me the dimensions of the square hood opening in millimeters and the distance the hood opening is from the front element,
I can work the rest out for myself. Thanks

Hood always on, unless I have to use a filter.

You might have to wait a week or three, but one will come up on Ebay sooner or later.
