I received an email notification:

Dear polchraine
You chose to be updated on forum topic Inside a Church and there has been an update.

You won't receive any more forum topic notifications for this topic until you click the link below to view the topic and reset your notifications.
View it here:

So, I click on the link and it takes me first to the holding page and then to the forum ... BUT there is no new post, the last one being one I made about 18 hours previously.

Did someone post and then delete it? If so, why does it not show as a deleted post?

I've had a look and I can confirm that someone did post a reply and then decided to delete it. It's a mystery to me as to why they deleted it as the reply was relevant and perfectly OK. Maybe thet deleted it by mistake.

Was it me, John?

I have deleted and reposted (very soon after deletion) a couple of times, just to avoid the 'edited' message which has always annoyed me a bit when the edit is a) almost immediate and b) hasn't yet been followed by a subsequent post on the same thread.

If it's causing unwanted side effects, though, I'll refrain in future.

Don't think it could have been you Chris ... you posted at 15:21 yesterday and I posted at 15:41. and there is no other message so your delete and repost theory is not appropriate.

That's a point... you only get one notification of new posts on a thread, don't you.

So deleting and reposting shouldn't result in two notifications.

It's not a problem to me, but it duplicates your effort!

When the initial response is posted an email notification would be sent out. If someone reacts to that immediately they will go to the page and may see the post, or if already deleted, nothing, or if a replacement post has been made that would be there. For the first two instances, if a replacement post was then made they would receive a further email notification.

It is a criticism of the software used here, that the board records posts in a chronological order rather than having a threaded option which allows the user to respond to a specific post, without quoting, and it builds up a tree of sub-threads and sub-sub-threads &c. In that mode you would only get emails when your own post is replied to hence cutting down on te number that are irrelevant.

To be honest with you I really don't agree. Forums like the AP one which create sub threads are a nightmare to follow. Chronological order is the only way to follow a discussion properly.

Imagine how many notifications I receive......

As an afterthought, don't forget you can switch off notifications in Website Options in your Profile.

"Sends an e-mail when someone replies to a topic you have posted in. This can be changed whenever you post."
Best regards, John
