non removable tripod head?

i don't know if i'm stupid or what but i can't find a way to remove the head of my tripod.

it's at least 10 years old and actually not a famous brand but it was fairly pricy and is a good quality tripod, is it possible i cant remove the head? i have just received the ball-head i ordered and feeling a bit frustrating right now!!?

More details of the tripod - make, model, etc, and/or photos of the problem might help?

There are some where the head is not removable but you should be able to tell by inspection.

I have an old Velbon tripod where it's quite clear the head and leg attachment assembly were moulded as one piece.

i am guessing it's just a crap tripod and by looking at it it's more likely i cant remove the head (moulded plastic).
i guess i need a new tripod... i would go for the manfrotto 055 but it's too pricy!

You can't remove the head on most consumer tripods.

@Boudou - why not keep an eye on eBay for a Manfrotto or a Gitzo - I saw a lightly used aluminium Gitzo that was perfectly fine go the other day for £60 without a head. I think some folks are selling on and upgrading to carbon fibre which may be lighter but is actually too brittle imho.

Not sure about Manfrotto, but Gitzo are all removeable.

Yes, according to their brochure all Manfrottos have removable heads, apart from the MODO tripod, which is a lightweight model just for point&shoot cams (and of course the little table-top mini tripods).

It looks a half way decent tripod with a hook to hang a bag on. So why don't you just lock the head down tight and put the new head on top via the 1/4inch thread which is used to mount your camera as most heads have a female thread on the bottom anyway. CHEERS Vic.

i thought about doing this but it will become bulky. it is an ok tripod though and cant really justify paying £60+ to use my ball-head.

the 1/4inch thread doesn't go on the head though (which is bigger), which means I need to get a nut that would fit, the quick release plate's nut doesn't seem to be removable either actually... (it's loose but somehow attached)

anyway thanks for your advice - need to give some second thought

Manfrotto come with a 1/4-3/8 adapter to enable heads with the larger hole to be fitted, often in the loose packaging that comes in the box.


These "nuts" are probably easily available as a spare part, because I, for one, nearly discarded mine

thanks - i've decided to take a gamble and buy a tripod on 7dayshop for a tenner - now will wait and see how good/bad it is!
