I know this sounds obvious but is the lens inadvertently set to manual focus?

no lens and camera set to autofocus

the lens and body both need to be set to af.

A GX10 owner couldn't get my SDM lenses to work on his despite assuring me he'd updated firmware, though the GX20 should work with SDM/HSM lenses out of the box without any Firmware updates, it sounds like you've tried the obvious so only option is back to the shop and ask to try another, a bit awkward if bought online.
Are there any Pentax/Samsung owners in your area you could meet up with to try the lens on another body?

Have you cleaned your contacts. Could be that causing the issue?

just tried lens on camera with live view on camera makes noise and shudders as though its trying to do something. Perfect with direct drive lenses though ?
