night time picture taking

I am a gardener. At present I spend an hour after dark searching for vine weavel bugs. They spent their time sitting on plant leaves. The search is to catch them before they mature and lay their eggs.
I see many kinds of life forms in my search and would like to capture them on camera. I can use the flash on camera but the torch light is not suitable for focusing with. Any Ideas? Any experience? Led lights, maybe. Mains light is impractible.
