Night scene portrait mode

I nearly found a use for one of the picture modes on my DS tonight. I took my camera and a light tripod with me on a mountain bike night ride and had a play to see if I could get a shot with me and my bike exposed with a decent sky as well. The night scene mode did surprisingly well, but not as well as the old technique of setting a manual exposure for the sky before popping the flash up:

The sky looks orange because I was in the hills above Edinburgh and that's the glow from the streetlights etc.[/img]

Hope you're right, and it's not your house on fire!

I like it. I used get that effect by faking it. IE a red filter over the lens and a cyan over the flash.
now I photoshop it.
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I hadn't expected the sky to be quite so colourful but I suppose it's due to the tungsten street lights - it does look quite artificial though, even though the colours haven't been doctored in photoshop at all.

My next task is to try and get some night riding shots which could be tricky. I'm thinking about getting a infra-red release and using trailing curtain sync and a longer exposure to get some movement in the shot.

Try out your various TV/VCR/DVD remotes before spending money on an IR device. Many people find they already have a perfectly good remote trigger sitting on the telly. That's what I use.

There's an Espio 140 with a remote release kicking about in the house somewhere so I was planning on giving that a go.

I'm not sure the rest of the family would be all that keen on my heading for the hills with the tv remote!

George, you are a genius! My TV remote works for the immediate relase, hold down any button for 2 secs and the shutter triggers! Just have to find a combination to work the 3 secs delay.
