What drew me to stay with Pentax was getting far more bang for my buck at the time of the K-30.
I viewed Canons 600D range and Nikons equivalent but saw better specs than these in the Pentax.
Honestly a lot of the product side line developments confuse me, such as the Q and K-01 and MX-1. I suspect these are the Japanese influences but they all suffer from short product life cycles.

To obtain new users you need to offer more for less. Give a serious reason to buck the trends of the major players.
Wifi, GPS, FF, and 1080P @ 60fps & 720P @ 120fps, tracking autofocus in stills and video, touch screens and possibly articulated floppy screens are the types of items that allow you to compete.

The alternative is to go hardcore into dedicated photo IQ roots, playing on the weather sealing and dynamic range/ resolution of the sensors etc. items like the MX-1 took a hit when they were compared with the completion on sensor size etc.

I'm still at a bit of a loss as to where Pentax sees it's core values/niche/mission statement/target audience etc. saying they have Pentax colours doesn't cut it anymore when they are usually post processed anyway.
