Welcome! Back in January I was new to digital, and have since learned a heck of a lot from this site . The natives are extremely friendly and helpful, so just post away on any questions.

Welcome John,

I'm a KR user and it's a superb camera. Easy to use to start wth pretty well anything possible as you learn more.

I know nothing of lasers for photography.

I only have A4 printing and use a five ink Canon Pixma iP4500. I think the latest version is the 4850.I use chipped ink refills from ink.co.uk and their excellent paper which although unbranded is like the inks German or Swiss and very good as well as much cheaper than Canon's own from who a set of cartridges cost as much as the printer!

Friends who have the luxury of A3 tend towards 6 and even 10 ink Epsons often with external ink adapters. Way out of my price range. You can get large prints online very cheap these days but of course you have to take a chance on the colour balance you get back!

Another vote for the Canon iP4500, used it with 3rd party ink's and it's quality is tremendous.

Heya, fellow Glasweigan! Whenever I've wanted to print photos I've used Loxley Colour's ROES service:

http://loxleycolour.com

Their prices are perhaps a little more than the High Street but the quality of printing you get is absolutely gorgeous and they have a lovely lustre finish. They were recommended to me by a friend of mine who studies photography at Glasgow Met. Their postal service is really quick and the photos are well packed so they don't get damaged. Doing it this way was cheaper for me than buying a proper photo printer - but then I don't print photos very often which may be why it's better value for money for me. Hope that helps ^^

Incidentally I'm not sure how close you are to Glasgow itself, but you should get yourself out to the Necropolis to the east of the city centre, past Strathclyde Uni campus. Some great photo ops to play with there, especially with the grey weather we're having just now - stop your aperture right down to get some funky silhouettes and cloud shots

If you're wanting to get more use out of your camera try checking out these tutorials I wrote on manual focusing and using your camera in manual mode. Happy shooting!

Hi John and welcome to the Forum. I have an Epsom printer which also prints a little darker than the picture on the monitor - I just lighten the photo a little before printing - adequate for my purposes!!

Cheers....John
