New to forum and DSLR's

Hi..... I am about to take my first steps into the world of DSLR's, the only real decision I have made so far is that I want to buy the K-r with the Pentax 18-55mm DA WR lens. I am also tempted to buy the Pentax DA 55-300mm lens as well to give me a good focal range to explore the camera and my skill level which is zero at the moment. I am somewhat reluctant to spend too much on lenses at the moment as I can see myself becoming a bit of a perfectionist in time and will be hankering for some decent prime lenses. As part of my learning curve I will post some images and welcome any criticism and feedback you may have so I will say goodbye until then.

Welcome, Barry!! I also have the Kr, but Mrs 9761 has kidnapped it, and is holding it to ransom over in Thailand at the moment!

I hope that maybe one day, she'll let me use my Kr!!

Wow!!!!! There are some pretty impressive line ups of lenses here and I am getting jittery about buying just one more, perhaps not a bad thing as I have no experience and dont want to waste money on something that might spend more time in the box than on the camera. Thanks for the welcome.

Just had a flick through the gallery, inspirational stuff and a great help to me as a beginner with the camera settings shown as well.

I bought my K-r last autumn after reading reviews on this site.
I then became a member and when I asked about longer focal length lenses the unanimous answer was the Pentax DA 55-300 !

So there you are - go ahead and do what you said ("He who dares - Rodney" in the words of Del boy !) I'm sure you won't regret it.

I recently posted in the Gallery a couple of pics I took at Hartland Quay using the K-r with the DA 55-300 ('On the rocks' & 'Altar for the wrecks') These were both hand held on a blustery day last week so they are perhaps not as sharp as they could have been - the posted images are also the jpegs straight from the camera without any touching up. Since this place is local to you they will probably be familiar.

Welcome the forum and the site in general! If you're serious about your new hobby, I would certainly recommend the 55-300mm to go with the 18-55mm. They make a great combination and the financial risk is not too great as the second-hand market is always fairly bouyant.

Had a look at your uploads of Hartland, as you say not bad for handheld on a blustery day especially the 170mm one. Yeh the 55-300 does seem to be the one to go for I may just throw caution to the wind and go for it especially as we are going to Scotland for three weeks soon so likely I will find it useful up there.

Hi Barry, the 55-300 is a very good lens, look in the classified ads as their are a couple for sale with a good saving over new.
