New PU interface - URGENT!

Can't find the old thread or a feedback area so apologies for restarting this but some things need to be addressed fast....
I like the clean new look. The white is a little hard on the eyes, but it looks nice.
However.
The small photo size is an absolute joke on a photographic forum. This has to be addressed, it's ridiculous and incredibly tiresome. It doesn't even facilitate clicking through to a bigger image because it opens a new window which you have to close to get back to the next photo etc. etc. soooo crap! if I had designed this 10 years ago I would have been embarrassed. Come on!

iPhone and presumably iPad issues still exist. The site basically doesn't work on an iPhone unless you keep it at 100% which means it's impossible to read the text or view the images properly. It all goes pear-shaped as soon as you try to zoom in. The DIVs making up the page are are not structured properly so they expand incorrectly, overlap essential navigation and OBSCURE the comments box. Rendering replies a tortuous process.
Said DIVs auto-expand incorrectly even on my Mac, so they don't line up with each other when there's a small comment inside them - messy, careless coding.

Images are resized! noooooo! So even when the viewer clicks through to see all the glorious detail, they are still delivered a tiny image. Crunching a 645 or K3 image down to 800 pixels just compresses the tones and renders a relatively dark, gloomy image with no detail. Even the appalling FACEBOOK at least allows 2048 pixel images if people click-though.
Come on people! all computer screens are big nowadays and in particular, they are all WIDE! there is no need for all this white space space.
I find it shocking that this was talked-through and given the go-ahead?? so weird.

[edit] oh yes, you missed a trick with the gallery - it would be really nice and really simple to allow users to hit the arrow keys to navigate. and on mobiles - to be able to swipe. Simple simple simple.

i wouldnt have started a post, but i have to say on mobile the menu is partly invisible, unless zoomed out, in which case we can't click on the buttons as they are too small...

I do know that plans are afoot to deal with mobile devices, but I don't know a timescale.

The problem with the gallery is the pictures keep changing size, so you have to chase the navigation around. Drives me nuts and is one of the things I would never have tolerated from my team of web designers back in the day.

What drives me mad is the fact the adverts in the right hand column on my laptop are very nearly the same size as the allowed photo display size.

Crazy.

I have to say I don't like the new interface at all - it look smart and modern (although overly white and bright) but doesn't do the job well. Take this thread, when I'm here I'm trying to read the thread contents but, even with small single line posts, I can only see three posts at once on my screen! At a quick calculation there is only 35% of the actual page space given to the post content it is rendering - the rest is vast amounts of white space both between posts and as margins, huge adverts and links to other recent posts (along with each having there ever so cute icon displayed) and even the actual post areas in each message are adorned with user photgraphs, statistics on their overall posting activities, links, timestamps and as a change from white space - grey space. If it wasn't for the original very long post and we had only shorties in the thread I think the actual area given over to proper content would drop to about 10% !!!

It all looks visually smart, but, in my opinion, fails miserably for actually rendering content.

I find, on a 1024x768 laptop screen, that the main and advert columns overlap slightly if a landscape photograph is displayed, with the adverts always on top. Which means the right hand edge of said photographs get a bit chopped. Not a major problem, but slightly annoying.
SteveH!

Some people call me 'strange'.
I prefer 'unconventional'.
But I'm willing to compromise and accept 'eccentric'.

I 'm not a fan of the new format, I think the size of images seems to be a major issue which on a photography forum is pretty important.

I appreciate why the ads are here, but they take up too much screen space,.
The navigation bar on the top of the screen is a pain on tablets and mobiles , it just constantly gets in the way!!!

Noone has yet explained the advantage of reducing the maximum image size on a photography site. Will you please?

Agree. I mentioned this quite a while back, but the top menu scales off the page, meaning you can't click the 'Forum' button for example.

I can't speak for this site, but I restrict the image sizes in my own and the ADAPS forums because it protects my bandwidth, reduced the amount of online storage I have to provide and makes loading quicker. After all, it's a discussion forum first and images are for illustration rather than exhibition.

The Gallery has no such restrictions.

That's just my personal thought on it, not that of Pentax User.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all the feedback. We have mentioned in a few previous posts that the site isn't yet mobile device friendly. This is something that we are working on and hope to have out within the first quarter of this year.

In regards to the smaller size of the photos in the forum, this is to compensate for the current size of the site. Part of the changes in making the site mobile friendly will include widening the site on screens that have the available area to do so. So those of you with large monitors will see a benefit. It is worth mentioning that while many of you share photos in the forum, if you really want a good display for your photos, I would recommend using the gallery in which we will be looking to further expand the size of the images being displayed.
