Nope the other way around Pentax evented it so they could name it.
I believe that 7 of the 10 greatest eventions in photography came from Pentax, it would be a lost to everyone if the brand name doesn't go on.
I have done some reading and the name Pentax is derived from "PENTAprism refleX".
In 1957 Asahi introduced their first SLR with a Pentaprism and it was called the Asahi Pentax. Before that the name Pentax was not in use by the Asahi Optical Company.

Pentax isn't the inventor of the Pentaprism viewfinder, it is Contax. They introduced the Contax S in 1949.
On some markets their cameras were called Pentacon which was derived from PENTAprism and CONtax.
You probable right then, sorry

Also, Pentax was at the time the name of a particular SLR camera manufactured by Asahi Optical Co, not the name of a company.

They didn't become Pentax Corp until really quite recently, my MZ-7 is badged "Asahi Optical".
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

You're getting a bit confused about this, which isn't surprising considering it's a complex tale. Zeiss made Contax cameras originally, but post war Zeiss became split by the division into West Germany (Carl Zeiss) and East Germany (Carl Zeiss Jena).

The original cameras from East Germany were made with original parts, but later the quality dropped as they started to manufacture their own.

The Contax SLR had the first pentaprism, but the Ashai Optical Co made the jump with the Pentax and its instant return mirror and later with its automatic diaphragm. These things we take for granted today, but try using some older cameras and see how user-unfriendly they are.
Best regards, John

I'm not paying more than 1% of attention to all blurry photos and endless threads on some forums full of wishes what the new camera will be, but let me (hopefully) spawn some fuss here , information from "some other place in the internet", source in theory more reliable and better than "blurry picture of something" says:
New K7D will be a bit smaller than K20D, with 14mpix APS-C sensor, bigger viewfinder, much faster AF , HDMI movies, microphone socket, no Fn button (functions under a 4-way switch), probably SDM kit lens.

Regarding the sensor, my personal opinion is, I wouldn't be suprised seeing same sensor as used in K20D, but (very important but) improved, we know that this sensor had (has?) some problems, i.e. excessive noise in dark areas, I saw nice research pointing to a potential problems with integrated signal amplifiers, which could contribute to that, we possibly feel that Pentax could in the past just jump out with high mpixel, immature sensor to show something new when competitors were far away. I wouldn't be suprised seeing this sensor application improved, sort of same sensor but better , it makes more sense to use something tested, mature, than something completely new, does it?, especially for some sort of products/mile stones.
To say more, I wouldn't be suprised to find the sensor in recently manufactured K20Ds is performing better than in the first batches.

I think there are around 50 odd pages on the forum that could possibly be compacted into 5 or 6 if you take out all the hesitation, repetition and deviation. Total frenzy, I just hope too many of them aren't disappointed.
Quite amusing though ...

It seems that all the camera makers know what the public want, but never actually incorporate those features into one model.
I realise that if they did so it would stop (for a while)all the slight upgrades

Perhaps a smaller manufacturer could steal a march on the others by bringing out exactly what the majority of the paying public want.
Certain the technology is there and from this type of thread it soon becomes clear exactly what is wanted

Announcement date while I'm still away. Hopefully I'll have internet access then. Only to check-in online of course .

There is also from the same source this:

Which seems to be a publicity photo.

Well that made up my mind .. DA* 60-250mm or new Pentax body.
As I have a Sigma APO EX 70-200mm f2.8 and TC I think the K1OD might be in severe trouble.

Nonetheless, can we keep excited for another whole month?

Some people aready had a chance to touch and play with new camera. They of course can't speak about it, I don't know any of them personally, but as they haven't said anything metal, poeple were trying to read their minds, or maybe somebody who tried to read the excitement in their eyes with the new camera could find some info that new camera is a "new" body, not really a K20D continuation, despite some features similar, quite different and SDM kit lens is quite possible. But of course we have to wait for official info - end of May .
