Nice shots, esp. the second which looks very crisp. And 100% crops? Yikes that's some good camera.

What lens?

There are not many possibilities.

It's not a mirror because Chirpy has used different apertures (and there are no doughnuts, and they're quite sharp).

The Pentax 500mm is a pig to use because of the metering and manual focussing. So it's probably not that.

Can't be a Sigma because the pictures are too good.

So it must be an old MF Tamron. Or a Novoflex.

Correct?

He has me wondering now :
Come on chirpy don't keep us in suspense.

I got to handle a K20 in the store today, but thats as far as it went, it didn't have a battery in it. Not a great deal of difference to the K10 in respect to its feel and looks

The other half had a pique of madness and allowed me to get a Sigma 500mm f4.5

Sorry George

Wow, a new K20 and Sigma 500mm prime, you must have shares in a diamond mine

Has your other half got a sister?

More to the point, where did you actually find a 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax mount?

And do you now trot about with the K10D + Tamrom 300mm f/2.8 over one shoulder, and the K20D + Sigma 500mm f/4.5 over the other?

Dan
K-3, a macro lens and a DA*300mm...

If we someone walking around with one shoulder much lower than the other then we know it is chirpy after carrying his K20d and Sigma 500 around for a while

Or do you have someone to carry it all for you since you must have won the lottery to pay for that lot

That was just bait! And it worked.

I have a new-found respect for Sigma. They made some truly awful lenses in the past, but several of the current crop seem to be very good.

B&H got a couple in stock a couple of weeks ago and I snapped one up. I was hoping they'd put their HSM (SDM) into it, but it's still the screw-focus. A bit embarrassing in a hide when it decides to go hunting, but it's a very sharp lens.

Here's another one from today - it was grey and overcast. Normally you can hardly see snipe in amongst reeds because they're so well camouflaged, but this lot were very obliging:

The lens does weigh a lot, along with the tripod, gimbal mount, camera and binoculars. I don't walk too far with it all, but have bought a backpack to load it into for longer walks.

I'm not intending to lug it and the Tamron 300mm around, something would break - most likely my back

Thanks Rae000. I'm waiting for the sun to shine - it makes so much difference with the water birds

OK, here's another from the same day as the Little Egret.

This one is less cropped that the others and I think it shows some nice detail.

I'm finding that I like the noise that I see on the K20D pictures much more. It cleans up easily in PP and what's left is nice and grainy compared to the K10D that could smear a bit (this shows on the bellies of the Snipe in the picture above).

I love taking pictures of Coots (the silly things):

That coot is great... the texture of the feathers, the water, everything. Lovely sharp image.

Very nice shots Jonathan. Comment Image
I'd be really interested to see a couple of shots comparing the K10 and the K20 with the same lens / subject / conditions - to see if there is a noticeable difference in quality between the two bodies.

Best regards,

Steve
