I'm interested to see how much the new Sony Full Frame camera will be when it comes out later this year. If Sony can bring the cost down enough to tempt a wider market then maybe Pentax will try it as well. As far as Pro photographers are concerned of course only Canon and Nikon have a good range of lenses for them at the moment.

the first report finished by saying most Pentax photographers shoot (raw) PEF.
Is this true?
if so Why?
surely it is a proprietory format which could well render all your 'negatives' useless in ten years time.
Can Pef do anything DNG can't?

PEFs are smaller (more highly compressed, losslessly). More will fit on your memory card and hard drive.
PEF can be converted to DNG when required.

If the time comes when PEFs seem doomed to extinction, there will no doubt be software to convert, plus massive hard drives and more powerful computers.

Adobe DNG converter (the standalone app) will convert from PEF to DNG. It's worth noting that DNG can be either uncompressed, or compressed. The K10D produces uncompressed DNG files, but the ADNGC can produce both (It can also embed the original PEF file in the DNG file for archiving purposes!)

Yes, it does (and JPEG). It doesn't produce PEF files, though.

Thanks. I already knew about the lack PEFs, but the fact the DNGs are uncompressed is the final straw to put me off. So a K10D it is!

The difference in size is between 4 to 8mb. PEFs I have shot have been from 8 to 12mb in size, whilst the DNG files have been all been about 16.5 mb. Quite a difference then!

thats an interesting observation, but not one I can concur with
my K10D does 9 frames at 3FPS before the buffer fills up in either PEF or DNG.

I am probably not entirely right about it being burst speed, however, this was an observation I believe in AP mag and it was with reference to cleraing the buffer faster due to the less use of CPU for DNG as there was no compression.
