Blimey what kind of shop is this? I would return for a full refund and buy from elsewhere...
This is a apparently reputable used and new camera shop. They will not give a refund but they did say they would buy the lens from me at above the going rate. They said this as if it was some kind of favor!
Out of interest, which camera shop? Is it well known?

When in Tokyo, I have my favourite and customer service is excellent.
If you must know the shop is Fujiya camera in Nakano.

Actually I am a little surprised that nobody has said that dust in a lens is nothing to worry about and that all new lenses have dust because that has been the response on other forums.
My new lenses have never had dust in them. I suppose the one thing we haven't asked is "how much dust?" and that might put things in better perspective. The odd speck here and there will make no difference whatsoever.
You must have been lucky because I have just returned the lens to the shop. No refund allowed and they let me choose from 3 copies. Gave me a pen light and let me check for dust. Each copy several specks of dust. Having read the web page on the lens tip site about dust and how every lens even new has dust then I was not surprised to see it. So I took a few shots with each and picked what I thought had the best image quality.

On returning home I tried the lens and nothing happened. I pressed the shutter button and the lens did not respond. Unbelievable I thought. So to check it was not the camera body I tried my 43ltd screw drive. That worked. When I replaced the da*200 on the camera it started working again. I hope fingers crossed that it was just a bit of dirt on the contacts! I will give it a thorough test tomorrow afternoon.

So I went to the nearest used camera shop to see what they would give me. He looked through the lens at a light and then printed out an estimate. To my shock the rating was not A excellent but AB. It is new I protested only 5 days old to which he replied it has a lot of dust.
Call me cynical, but did it occur that the dealer may have been exaggerating the issue to knock you down on price?

I think we would all probably be surprised if we made a habit of shining torches into our supposedly 'dust free' lenses. I bought one (s/h) from the US forum - the seller had posted a picture using torch light through the lens, and it looked like you could grow potatoes in there. In reality, I can't see anything at all when I look through it at a bright light such as the sky, and if it's having an effect on IQ I can't see it.

Slightly off topic i took a brand new unopened computer which I received as an insurance claim to CEX. The box was still sealed And the guy in CEX opened the box checked it worked and booted it up for the first time. He then offered me the price based on a B rated laptop, so i said why is it not A rated and he told me it was now an opened box laptop and so could not offer the A rated price

CEX in my experience ALWAYS resort to dodgy tactics like this example you mentioned.

Regarding the topic, I guess it all comes down to what will give you the piece of mind to continue on. No one should go through what you are experiencing right now. I hope it gets resolved.

I pride myself on being a fairly calm and generally lovely bloke... But I think I'd have knocked his head off his shoulders!

Eee bi gum. Absolutely. At the shop I exchanged it they asked how much I was offered by the other shop - 36000 yen, 102000 new, they assured me that they would have given me 50,000yen and regarding the dust I have a 77ltd which has a galaxy of dust inside and it does not seem to affect the images. What really bothered me was the affect on resale value.
