Hi Peter.
That's odd - lots of discussions and comparisons on the web, most say that GigE should be faster or at least the same as USB2. Can't find anyone who says it should be significantly slower, and mine certainly isn't. YMMV (and indeed clearly does).

Have to agree. For straight data transfer, I've found GbE faster (or at least no slower) than USB2. After all, isn't USB2 a maximum of 480 Mbit/s? Or about half a Gigabit/s?

Of course, actual speed across a network will only be as fast as the slowest link in the chain..

My impression of image loading/editing speed might be more influenced by the capabilities of my, now aged, NAS box more than my network.

Well its all plumbed in and running away nicely. I went with novastor for backing up stuff, a trial was included and it did all I could ask for so I bought a 5 licence deal for £13, that covers my laptops and the kids android tablets as well. I'm well pleased with it, and for £300 it seems like a bargain for the peace of mind it gives.
Thanx all for your help
One day you'll find, 10yrs have got behind you.
