Nelson Mandela concert

Did anybody watch it tonight? it was on live here in Holland and it was really good. It was good to seem him come on stage, so fragile as he is now, and the reception that he received, the waves of love coming at him, you could feel it at home, it must have been great to be there.
I thought Paul Rogers was great with Queen - anyone know why John Deacon wasn't on bass btw?
And Amy Winehouse actually managed to stay upright and sing. What a relief!
If you didn't see it but get the chance do watch it. All the African musicians were wonderful as was Amaral from Spain.

Ok i can answer teh John Deacon question - he hasn't played with them since the Freddie Mercury tribute. the new bass payer is Danny Miranda - and he is impressive! As a bass player myslef i thought he was actually better than Deacon.

I caught a bit and thought Amy Winehouse was poor (and I like her stuff so I'm usually quick to defend her). I would have liked to see Leona Lewis or even the Sugababes take her role on that one tbh.

I agree Paul Rogers was good though - it would have been easy to replace Freddie with one of countless look/sing-alikes but I think he brought his own style to it in a way that was different to the original without being disrespectful to it (if you know what I mean).

Bit too much of Phillip Schofield for my liking so I was flicking between the concert and the BBC Glastonbury coverage...

The Sugababes were awful. I was really disappointed in them. Maybe nerves got to them, I don't know, but they were not good. It was especially painful watching them trying to get the crowd to sing along with them.

Given that Amy Winehouse only got out of hospital that morning I think she did OK, Not great but OK. It was good to see her performing again. I got the feeling she was bored singing Rehab yet again. I wonder if she'll turn up for Glasto and how she'll do there. I can't see her managing a full set somehow.

As for Queen with Paul Rogers, I think I'd go and see them in concert. I was worried it would be the Brian May show but thankfully it wasn't. And with Paul Rogers there he (May) doesn't have to sing. Having seen Brian May solo once believe me he should stick to guitar.

Suprised about the Sugababes, I missed their set as I was watching Lupe Fiasco on the Glastonbury interactive service and just switched back in time to miss them. I've been impressed with their live performances in the past which is why I suggested them, but then I guess nerves can get to the best of us - especially with Nelson (and about 80 million others) watching...

I'd probably go and watch Queen with Paul Rogers - I imagine that'd be about as good a sing-along set as you could get this side of an ABBA reunion!

As for Amy, I think she has a wonderful voice and writes cracking tunes but she really needs to go away for a long time and sort herself out. I went to see her live in Camden last year (year before maybe?) and she struggled with the set even then - from what I see on TV since she hasn't got any better. Real shame as she has immense natural talent.

I recommend you go and see Paul Rodgers on his own, you will not leave dissapointed I've seen him 5 times, Free, Bad Company (original and 2005 line ups), The Law and solo. They call him the Voice in rock circles, never heard him miss a note and he has a back catalouge full of classics (and I'm not talking about All Right Now).
