I tend to agree with Mike here, a tiny number of older lenses are fantastic and can match modern equivalents. However most older lenses cannot, although some of them are nearly as good. But for many of us (me included) 'nearly as good' is good enough when we're talking about a 5, 10 or 20x price differential.

Quite so Tim. I have been lucky enough to indulge myself over a period of a couple of years with some new lenses I caught at good prices and bought used lenses at prices that suited me.

I almost regard LBA as a business expense - being self employed I need something to motivate me to stay on the treadmill

Don't get me wrong here lads, I'm not saying that the older lenses are better - I'm just trying to figure out how much better the newer lenses are.

I'd actually like to get into making money with photography so I'm trying to figure out what's the bare minimum I need in terms of glass to not be laughed off.

Results will speak louder than glass - well you'd hope so.

How do you propose to make money?

Going to go the sell-out route and do macro or even ... micro-stock.

Good luck - I gather it takes time, dedication and an eye for a commercial shot.

Mongoose - the Zeiss Flektagon, I am sure I recall AP and others sneering at that lens years ago. I am right that it's quite old aren't I? Wasn't it basically a kit lens with an Exacta? That said I am sure yours is an excellent example but I would hope the modern lenses would be somewhat better in most cases.
LALALALA I can't hear you, I don't need to upgrade my standard prime.......

it's certainly quite an old design, I got mine with an old Practica along with a Sonar 135 f/3.5. Mine is the later MC version which is supposed to be the best.

This chap over on dpreview is using the same lens

I haven't seen any side by side comparisons between a Flek and a more modern 35, but the Flek is good enough for me for now.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

and yeah, it does take time - I'm still working on it myself but they do offer a lot of hints. Shutterstock is the best one for Microstock IMHO. Istockphoto is good, but you won't make as much money as shutterstock. Alamy is great for macrostock (i.e. if you have some pro-level shots good for posters), and can net you a few hundred for each download.

EDIT: http://www.istockphoto.com/tutorial_2.1_focus.php is a great tutorial for those interested in taking better photo's as well - not just for stock

... glass has nothing to do with the ability to create a sellable shot. Nothing at all.

Why does everyone suddenly figure they can make money from photography?

Well it does when there are IQ standards for submission. They are really tough on getting good images as well as very high IQ images.

As for making money - where do you come about it being sudden? People have been making money / trying to make money for at least the past few decades with photography.

An opinion: a lens will not make or break a shot. If you're aware of what they do, then you can play to their strengths. That's part of the art.

The thing that will sell a shot or not is lighting. And that's the *really* difficult bit.

The "suddenly" is that pretty much every other thread at the moment seems concerned with the ability to make money out of a hobby....

Oh boy....making money, which lens...decisions,decisions...

The only lenses that should be on the top of each LBA list are the ones you already own. Your eyes Every other lens only delivers the goods if your eyes do the job.

My 2 cnts, obviously.
Best regards,

Martin.

The only other thread in regards to making cash w/photography that I saw on a quick browse is the one I posted in the general chat. I was curious to see the current peer *group demographics. I had thought that based on the results of that poll (1 in 3 members here having received some form of financial remuneration) that it would be okay to mention that I too had an active interest in doing the same. I also had mentioned an interest in shooting stock in my lighting thread, but didn't elaborate further (as to trying to make money).

So I take it based on the comments that I've breached some aspect of forum etiquette. I'm terribly sorry and will refrain from discussing any of the financial aspects of photography again and discus / present only technical or artistic questions or comments.

Sorry all!

Edited a bit of grammer

I'm not aware of any problem with discussing making money from photography Stefan. I'm sure you aren't supposed to take the comment above personally
