I'm looking at purchasing a wide angle lens for my K20D. I've been researching the 12-24 by Pentax and Samsung £££ and the 10-20mm £300+ by Sigma...then there's the Tamron!

Just throwing this out there to see any "expert" advice?!

Cheers

I tried several Tamrons (and Sigmas) at SRS to find the best samples and try them against the 12-24 as I am very price conscious (tight! :wink.

The net result was I bought a s/h Samsung as it was SO much better than even the best of the others. The extra £'s was definitely worth it, the loss of the 2mm was of no interest to me as there is just a bit too much perspective stretch at the very wide end, I just wanted a bit more below the 17mm of the 17-70, 12mm is more than sufficient.

I've also compared the Samsung with a couple of Pentax DA 12-24's and found no discernible optical or physical differences and the coating colours look exactly the same, the difference is purely cosmetic and the Samsung doesn't have the same lens ID chip, which means that the auto CA & distortion features (JPEG only) on a K-7 (and K-x?) don't function, but that's the same with the Tamron and Sigma.

The only 10-24 that comes anywhere near the Pentax is the Nikon one and that won't fit a Pentax!

Paul, I have the Sigma 10-20 and think it's great I''m sure the Pentax is also great, and very probably slightly better in many respects (not all though ), but for me it wasn't £500 better.

I have the 10-24 and I think I'll be wandering back to SRS while I'm in the UK in a few weeks to check out another copy. I'm not 100% happy about the sharpness, especially at 10mm. Since that's why I've got it, it's not very good.
This album has a lot of shots with it: http://www.23hq.com/bretti_kivi/album/5428484

I find it bulky (it's the biggest lens I have) and flare is difficult to control. The perspective is manic, really like it, but it is definitely extreme.

I don't know what I'm going to do with mine. Part of me would swap it in a heartbeat for a really good 120-400; another part says "a 12 or 14 would simply rock" and for the car rig, I need something shorter than 16mm.

Thanks fellas for the comments, and yes Richard I found your chat on the other forum which says a lot for the 12-24 whether it be Pentax or Samsung.
Thanks again, Now it's between the Sigma 10-20mm or Samsung 12-24
