Pentax already produce a 250-600. It's max aperture is 1:5.6, which isn't bad for a 600mm lens, and it only costs £1,069.00 (for a DA* lens).
But, I only recall one member of this forum actually buying one (no doubt there are more, my memory is increasingly fallible). So, it would seem to suggest that there really isn't much of a market for long lenses amongst Pentax owners.
Just as there appears to be some lack of knowledge of the lenses in the Pentax catalogue.

If you can't say something nice about Pentax, you won't say anything at all.

Yes i know what it is, I just think there is no need for it. As there could well be people with Dyscalculia on here and no one is perfect.Quote:

I rarely apologise when there's nothing to apologise for.
The fact you issued an apology doesn't change the fact an EPIC FAIL was made.

George had the good manners to acknowledge his error and apologise. That should have been sufficient so I don't see the point in dragging the matter up.

Why do members on this forum keep implying there isn't a market for long lenses amongst Pentax owners when there clearly is!

It is, of course a classic catch-22. Pentax cannot make long lenses because there isn't enough of a market. People who want long lenses will not buy Pentax because they don't make long lenses.
Until very recently Pentax have not really had the best camera for long lenses. Autofocus was slow and high ISO performance was lacking (please don't shout me down for that - just my opinion). If they can get some pros to start looking more seriously at the camera then maybe some new lenses will emerge.

The point isn't so much that there's no demand, clearly there is, but that when you offer the item eventually most of the demand fizzles away because of the price. It's more about priorities and what will enable Pentax to increase its market share. Providing something that is a small section of the market and already covered by others isn't the way to earn megabucks.
I always remember one gentleman who said repeatedly "I really want a ..... if only they made it I'd have one straight away." When it became available I went straight there and of course the outcome was, "I'll have to seriously think about that...." He never bought one of course.

So how come other manufacturers do make long lenses (a sure indication that they are making money out of them). The decision seems positively perverse to me.
Blokey goes to the Pentax car shop and asks about the cars which all have three wheels.
Sales Blokey says that'll be fine if you don't go very fast.
Blokey says I want to go fast, that is why I am buying the car.
Sales Blokey says you shouldn't want to go fast. Anyway our modern three wheelers are much faster than our old ones.
Blokey says may be so, but they are not fast enough for my needs.
Sales Blokey says well, if you really need to go that fast you can buy one of our three wheelers and get it converted to four wheels at another dealer, or you can buy an axle of one of our lorries and an adaptor kit to fit to your three wheeler to convert it to four wheels.
Blokey slams his wallet shut and stumbles into the Ford/Toyota dealer.
Sound familiar?

Is there an outbreak of mass dyscalculia?
sit me in room with no visual points of reference, and I will be unable to tell you if I've been there for five minutes, fifty minutes of five hours.
That is ok.
Our preferred method of telling time involves count to sixty and repeat. It is wrong. I believe fluid dynamics is a more accurate way to describe time. We all know the universe is expanding... We all know that the closer an object travels to the speed of light, the slower time goes, so it stands to reason that the rate of the expansion of the universe is not constant, then neither is the flow of time. Even the rotation of the Earth (as it slows) will change time relative to our position.
