I wanted to be out and about today taking pictures, but the weather was awful.

I went about calibrating the focus on me lenses and things like that then I thought I'd have a play. To explain, I am an engineer. I deal with hard facts and equations and epsilons and thetas and I do not have an artistic bone in my body.

I fetched up with this -

All I can say is that it looked about right for my mood.

Any thoughts appreciated.

To be brutally frank, there are one or two areas where it might be improved.

First, it's not as sharp as it might be.
Second, the colours don't look quite right to me, but of course, I wasn't there.
Third, the leaves to the left and the plant to the right are not helpful.
Fourth, it's not as contrasty as I would like, though I appreciate you might feel otherwise.

On the plus side, the colours go well together, and there is a slight three-D feel, which is good.

This type of shot is enormously dependent on the light quality to be effective. You need to be there at the right time.

Oggy, whilst, like me, you may feel you lack the artist's eye, you can LEARN a lot about the "rules" of composition, and with good technique and hard work produce very good pictures.

Einstein said genius was 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. Scott the Hat's bird pictures, Simonkit's Welsh landscapes and Aminstar's water pictures are all examples of excellent technique and hard graft. And a bit of artistry!

So don't do yourself down. (That's our job! ) All you need is practice.

Thanks for your candour George.. I appreciate it.

Paradoxically correcting the colour would more or less put it back to the picture I started with. The rain had washed all the dust off the nettle and made it look thoroughly verdant and healthy, which was not the effect I was looking. I took some of the green out and put a little red in to try to make it more drab to fit in better with my mood at the time, being stuck indoors with the weather et al.

If I may suggest one correction to your post, what I need is practice and feedback.

Thanks
