A wonderful set showing just what this little camera can do. Did you shoot in RAW or JPEGs?

Yes, this little camera is certainly holding its own out amongst the big boys. It must be a very handy little device, and I have heard that the menus are similar to the DSLRs, which helps for consistency.

They were shot as colour JPEGs, and tweaked (and the B & W conversion done) in PaintShop Pro X6, which is the way I nearly always work. Somehow the MX-1 manages to produce usable output even at higher ISO settings for a compact camera (the highest here is #2 at 640).

Yes, the menus are similar to the DSLRs. It is also easy to forget it's not a DSLR and lift the camera to the eye! However, I do think the tilting screen is very good for composing shots.

Not sure I'd go that far.

The lack of a viewfinder makes handling very different to a DSLR and more demanding in bright light. But all compacts are like this.

Its write times are incredibly slow: you really have to change the way you work, as saving a RAW and JPEG file takes an age. You find yourself standing around just waiting for the camera to let you take another picture or for it to switch itself off. I'm surprised no one has picked up on this.

The results are very pleasing, however, particularly when one considers the size of the sensor. I found the RAW files quite malleable with a surprising amount of detail recoverable from blown highlights, although the dynamic range is good to start with.

Monochrome tones seem to be very nice, both subtle and punchy.
