Friend has mx-1 on av, tv , manual when she presses shutter to focus it seems so achieve focus for split second then shift off it but if she puts camera into auto its fine , has anyone got any ideas what is wrong. She bought it from Japan about6 months ago but has only tried it now due to problems at home , help much appreciated

If its like Q7 then its the 'autofocus method' set in camera menus (AF/MF Settings), auto overrides it. Looks like its set to continuous (AFC - moving image in menu) which moves around as you move camera. Try setting it to smiley face to see if that solves it (will need to select most appropriate for use)

Then again Mx-1 could be completely different.

Check the button with the flower on and make sure its on AF, not on macro or on manual focus or something not intended. Using Auto or the Auto Pict would reset that for those modes.

This might assist!!
If the focus area is circular (tracking) , go to the menu. Select AF Setting. In Focusing Area select the top rectangle option and save.
