Must not Miss

We were not having a family holiday this year as it had proved impossible for me and Mrs Fritzthedog to get the same weeks off work.

Then at the last minute - she managed to get next week off - too late to arrange to go further afield, I have just booked a cottage inbetween Tenby and Saundersfoot in South Pembrokshire

This is not an area I have ever visited - I know North and mid Wales fairly well but when it comes to the South - experience is limited to Cardiff and Swansea.

So - my question to members who do know the area is - what must I not miss?

Have not been to that area since i was a child, but photographically Manorbier area and it's Castle might be worth a look. Enjoy your break.

Fecci's Ice Cream Parlour in Tenby!

I used to love going there in the '60s - my brother went back a couple of years ago and it is still as good.

Goscar Rock on the North Beach at Tenby can provide some good landscapes/sunset shots.

I have not been there myself - not yet

The Gower, Llanelli etc are my nearest experiences so if you plan to travel near there I may be able to help, howver, I expect you will remain close by your digs

That made me chuckle Stu - according to my wife I am a nightmare on holiday as I can not 'stay put' - I would think nothing of a 2 hour drive to visit something worth photographing

How about -

Pembroke Castle and town
St David's Cathedral
Pembroke national park
The coastal walks (especially if you can't "stay put")

The "VisitPembroke" web site (sorry I haven't got the link) could give you other ideas.

Many years since we've been, it wsa very enjoyable and would not mind going again sometime.

this is truly a "gem". However be careful some of the rocks can be slippy, my wife fell here and hurt her back.

Can recommend St. Govan's chapel as well. Tenby itself is quite photogenic, along with the 'rock' that gets cut of at high tide. Caldey Island is also worth a visit - short boat-trip

Hi Carl

Just got back from a week there myself, we stayed in a cottage in Wisemans Bridge, about half mile along the coast from Saundersfoot. Is a lovely area, have been there a fair bit with the kids . Both Saundersfoot and Tenby are quite photogenic seaside towns anyway, and Wisemans Bridge has interesting rock formations on the beach if you and an early morning sunrise beach shot .

One thing I an highly recommend is taking a day trip to St David's, about a 40 min drive, it's a beautiful town and has a lovely old cathedral to shoot. But it's close to Ramsey island and there are a couple of companies that run boat trips around the island, into all the sea caves, seal and dolphin spotting. They launch the boats from the lifeboat jetty which is spectacular at the bottom of he cliffs. An amazing experience and loads of photo opportunities. Will try and post some pics for you later.

Not at from there is also Skomer island if you want some puffin action.

As a previous poster mentioned, Pembroke castle is close and worth a visit.

Thanks Howard and Andy - 2 recommendations - seems I need to have a look at St Govans.

St David's is certainly on the agenda Andy (we nearly booked somewhere near there). Will have a look at Wisemans bridge too and as we will only be 2 miles away (Begelly) may just manage a sunrise

I will probably give Skomer a miss as Puffins have become a bit of an obsession this year - Bempton - Farne Isles - Bass rock.

Now just need to pray to the sun gods......

You have to visit Bosherston Lily Ponds 51.613726,-4.926002 and nip across the coast path to Barafundle Bay 51.618176,-4.9033. On a sunny day you'd think you were on the Mediterranean!

This one's a must if you head up towards St Davids - a spectacular coastal walk with interesting industrial relics, deserted sandy beach and an excellent pub next to a tiny harbour:

Start at Abereiddy 51.936645,-5.206068 and go along the coast past the blue lagoon 51.937863,-5.209115 and down the steps to deserted sandy beach Traeth Llyfn 51.942678,-5.198858. From Traeth Llyfn go on to Porthgain 51.948392,-5.181777 for fresh Abercastle Crab and a pint at The Sloop!
