Movies with the K7! Where do i start?

Posted 31/05/2011 - 16:21 Link
Hi all,

I'm going to make a short film and have been tinkering with the K7... does anyone have any good video links for tips etc. It would be great if this forum had a video section.

So far I've recorded a few test scenes and have noticed that when the lighting condition changes from dark to light and vice versa., that their is a glitch - a sudden blank frame and a scratchy noise. Any ideas??

Thanks in advance

not without seeing a sample.. (dropped frames could be your memory card is not fast enough... class six to class ten?). also could be the nle you use to edit is not set up to the same frame rate as the pentax 25 fps?

Anywho... Gartmore is the guy, who may know the most about filming and movie making around here...
My advice is use an external mic or recorder (search the forums, it's been discussed recently) and if you set you camera up manually, and lock the exposure (AE lock button) before recording... should help when the lighting changes.

yeah you can't post a video directly here in the forums... but you upload it elsewhere and post a link...

also I see you got manual focus lenses? I recommend you start using those for video... mf lenses are da'bomb when shooting video on d-slrs.. much better feel to them than af lenses.

I've noticed with older manual lenses you need to hit the AEL button after you start recording.

Use an external mic or sound recorder if you want to record sound.

Use your fast lenses wide open, it looks nice!

Make use of shake reduction for hand held shooting. Works very well!

Right will do... I did a test shoot on my 17-50 Tamron Af... as you will see - focussing wasn't achieved very accurately (need practice!)

Not very likely because the camera has a buffer (RAM) and if that gets full it simply stops.
So the speed of the card shouldn't cause any skips in the frames.

Well here is the clip!

As i said... my focussing is abysmal on this and I aim to make a handle/spoke/arm to enable me to get better purchase and control.

Saying that... the glitch is really interesting. it's like the editing technique at the beginning of batman begins!

I honestly think the K7 is terrible for video.

The fact that it ONLY has auto sensitivity is a show stopper. You can't change the shutter speed/frame rate either which is annoying - so only 30FPS shooting.

I imagine that a firmware update could bring manual sensitivity but honestly why would they?

I know that it's a DSLR, and not a video camera, but if you look at the competitors - they have better video mode.

Have you tried using a different lens? Or tried switching it to manual aperture? That looks to me like it is the diaphragm or aperture being changed.

Well the K7 was a very early video DSLR, and I think it works great within its limitations. It's more worrying that better controls weren't added to the Kr and K5 though.

Here's a couple of vids I did with the K7 'just for fun'!

use of an M lens = full manual apertur control (on my kr I can change aperture while shooting) it shoots at 25 fps which measns the Shutter speed is effectively fixed..... and if you meter it then set the AE lock you are shooting full manual.
I simply do a greycard reading and color balnce, lock the AE and go... no problems at all.
It might surprise some to know, that for all the fancy do-dads, most serious video shooters set evrything to manual.

It might also surprise some to know... (I have hdv, avchd camcorders as well so have tested) that the codec Pentax chooses for video will chroma key better than avchd.

Just learn when and how to use the camera for video and it will hold it's own against anything else out there.

Old pre-sets are probably better for video or remove the ball bearing from the aperture ring on an old 50mm etc.

Some really useful comments there.

SO... I'm going to use my Pentax 50mm or Sigma 24 mm which both have an aperture ring. I will change aperture on the lens. The clicks don't matter as i'm adding music/sound recorded effects later anyway to my film eventually. Oh yeah i'm making a short arty film over the course of the year.

I'll grey card (been a while - used to love doing that) and AELock.

I think that this GLITCH may stop but it may be an error and i think i have a two year warranty anyway with the K& if there is an issue. Hope not.

For low light that light housing looks really good, though I've heard that turning my bembo upside down may work too.

I've never done any video in the past but thought I would give it a go and collect lots of footage over the year for a reaally dense film to accompany a poem i wrote some years back.

Any more advice.... most gratefully received.
