I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with NYC as I feel I ought to be able to get excellent shots, but somehow never quite meet my expectations.

The following is a mixed bag, some for the photographs, some for fun only! There is only one I am pleased with, so I am interested to see if you agree with me!

1. The Chrysler Building. SMC-A 28mm f/2.8 lens. Not a good photograph but my favourite skyscraper.




2. Shopping at Fairway. Roadside fruit and veg on Braodway. SMC-A 28mm f/2.8 lens.




All the rest of these shots were taken one afternoon with the DA* 50-135mm lens (I decided to travel light with just camera and one lens.)

5. Are you looking at me? An American robin in Central Park.




6. Coach ride. Just after this shot a lady rushed across the middle of this scene with her camera phone and stood there taking pictures ruining any chance of an improved composition as the horse and coach came around the fountain. How dare she!




7. Spring in Central Park. I keep trying to get a really good shot with these iconic lamp posts in the park but have yet to succeed. One day...




8. The Falconer. Deliberately unexposed to put the statue in silhouette and to increase the saturation of the skies.




9. Dial-a-head Pun intended.




10. The Falcon There is a nesting pair of falcons on the east side of Central Park. Strange men with large white lenses and gimbal mount headed tripods lurk around the boating pond hoping for a glimpse. Meanwhile, the falcon is on a lamp post about 20 blocks away. I could have done with a lens longer than 135mm for this shot!

Fruit and veg is great for the colour, but the spring blooms shot edges it out - for me, anyway. The American robin is a lovely shot, but the light was not your friend at that time. The underexposure works a treat with the silhouette, yet the tree branches don't 'frame' it for me.

Shopping at Fairway and The Falconer are my favourites. But they're a most varied set not what one might expect from a typical trip to NYC. The light was good and the potential clearly endless. Glad to see you're making use of the 28mm!

I echo your thoughts on the frustrations of shooting pictures in NYC, I think because it is so busy it is extremely difficult to get clean compositions.

You manged some nice shots though.

Nice set - really makes me want to go to New York! (never been). I like the Falconer (and the Falcon!) - although I also am quite taken with the first one - it's almost two photographs: the top half (from above the top of the white 'blanket' looks like a postcard of the Chrysler building (and a nice one), the bottom half a more generic street scene. I agree with you that this is the best skyscraper... would love to see it in real life...

Thanks for all the kind comments. Shopping at Fairway was my favourite although I was quite pleased with the robin. American robins are much duller and less red chested than the type we get in Britain..

I really like the fruit stall, but the 1st B+W is my favourite, the blossoms make it look a bit infra-red. The robin is nice but could perhaps have done with a bit of flash, the light is a bit flat. I also like the spring blossoms with the lamp.

It's a shame about the big bit of cloth in the shot of the Chrysler building, it detracts from a great shot, the lines of the buildings are lovely and the clouds set off the Chrysler building nicely.
