Moon shot through telescope

I put a T-mount on the back of my telescope and managed to get this shot. Focusing is more difficult, this is the smallest image i could get due to the magnification.

Try again when you don't have a full moon, and focus on the terminator. One of the things that I love most about looking at the moon through a telescope is that you can see little bits of the moon that appear to stretch off into space (bits of higher ground that are reflecting sunlight when most of the neighbouring ground is already in the dark).

An image of this would be nice to see!

out of interest how much does it cost to get some kit to do something like this? Would love to be able to give this a try.

It's nice, but in all honesty, I'd hope for quite a bit better than this with the magnification available with a telescope.

There have been quite a few shots posted here that are about as good as this, taken with just a 400 or 500mm lens on the camera.

In fact, you ought to have a go with your 55-300. You might be surprised what you can achieve.

It'll depend on the quality of the scope, cheapies can be obtained for £200 - £300 or you can spend upwards of £1500 - £2000 just for the scope only and add another £300 ish for a decent eyepiece when you want to use it as a scope.

This is a very good effort Sam. Actually I think it's a lot better than shots I've seen with long lenses but that quality is less evident due to the phase of the Moon and lack of crater detail. I find 4 to 8 days into the cycle gives the best results and the equivalent on the wane. The clarity of the air makes a big difference and cold winter nights are best as the air holds less moisture, plus shooting times are more convenient.

I have a very useful and very reasonably priced GSO 40mm eyepiece which incorporates a T thread. You can attach it direct to the camera with a T ring, or you can attach it to a lens with the appropriate adaptor.

It's certainly better than many, I'd agree, but I do think Clarky's effort, for instance, was excellent:

I'd urge Jamie to have a go, even with his 55-300 to start with. It's a bit on the short side, but would cost him nothing to try it, and if he's never tackled something like that, I still think he'd be quite surprised at what can be achieved.

It's not that hard to get a decent result with a long lens. This was taken, hand held, with a 45 year old Tamron 400mm f7.5 lens on a K200D.

It's just so difficult to compare at that phase of the Moon because there is so little detail to see, 95% of the Moon will look washed out however it is photographed. The telescope will come into it's own when the Moon looks at it's best, the available light is so much less and the atmospheric conditions are right. You can get a very good single shot then but focus stacking can give fantastic results. And of course you can use eyepieces to increase the magnification for some nice close, surface detail.

I am very impressed with the above shot, that's one of the best I've seen with a long lens.

But I wouldn't expect much more from Sammy's telescope effort for the reasons I have set out.

Really fine result there Sam...one to be proud of.

If you have a photo editing program perhaps try a little bit of sharpening ...but not too much!

I havent had the scope very long and only had two or three clear nights since July.
I took this last night between clouds so didn't have much time. It was literally a case of point the scope attach the camera and shoot.
Maybe when ive got more time I can do a better job.
