I'm sure that this question has been asked before, so i will apoligise now if it has.

I have a Manfrotto 679B Monopod and i would like to know if my 488RC2 ball head would be ok to use instead or should i go for a 234 or a 234RC.

The easiest way to find out is to try it for yourself - you have the head and the monopod so put them together and take them out for the day.

If there's one thing I've learned from these "which combination" threads it's that you'll never get any sort of concensus opinion, one man's meat is another's poison and all that...

Hope it works for you!

234rc I have it and like it, works well and is compact, quick release is very convenient.

Your recommendation came at just the right time, Edumad. I was looking for a head to fit on a monopod that's been sitting unused for about 10 years. My 234RC arrived today from Morris Photographic and it's ideal -- well-built, smallish and works a treat. Great suggestion.

I find a ball head works well with a monopod (can't stand it on the tripod, uugh). I usually use my monopod at airshows and find that with a ballhead quite slack - free to move - I can use the monopod to take the weight and give some stability whist still giving me the freedom to pan on rapidly crossing/vertically moving objects. Sounds odd I know, but it works for me.

Monopods are inherently unstable, I find the freedom of movement in a ball head ideal for taking up the adjustment.

I find that ballhead also work very good on a monopod.
I leave them half open so that they give some friction but are still adjustable easily.
Although I have a normal ballhead (gitzo for got the number) I would advise getting a off centre ballhead like this one link
It might seem a bit weird but the height of a monopod is important and the camera sits on the head but when you go to portrait mode it's next to the head so I find the monopod too low then. I'm also a person that switch a lot between the two and a off centre head will keep the camera roughly at the same height.

GH3750QR looks very good since it can carry 8kg but it cost £ 153.00 though.

ps. I'm not the only one with this problem right?

Ball heads are great, but I wouldn't trust the low range one, and therefore they are expensive. The monopod's inherent freedom, reduces the added advantage. It is quicker though.
I have a ball head on my tripod (came with) and find it very quick, but depends on what you're shooting, a pan&tilt can be better.
