The Mk II is marked as such and is supplied with the new K20D. It will make a difference with the 14.6 MP sensor and also with large prints.
With your K10D the original 18-55mm is a very good lens anyway.

And realistically speaking does it really matter which one I have if the largest print size I'm going to produce is a 10"x8"
Even with the K10D, it might matter if you crop the image first. And realistically speaking does it really matter which one I have if the largest print size I'm going to produce is a 10"x8"
When viewing images at 100%, I could clearly see that my mk II was sharper at the borders than my mk I. In fact I'm considering selling my 16-45mm because it offers such little advantage over this new lens.
It is marked with a red "II".

Thanks for the replies guys. Mines definately a MK1. I'm happy with it. I was curious to know if it was worth the cost of changing it. I think I'll save my cash for a Bigma!

I've noticed that on my Mk I on widest angle there tends to be a drop off in light towards the corners. It showed up first on blue sky shots where the sky seems to be a deeper blue in the corners.
Will the MkII that I have on order be better?
What improvements have they made to the MkII?

No, I think it would take a more major change of design to reduce it, like larger elements. The vignetting is the price you pay for the small size. Doesn't bother me much as it can be fixed with Silkypix.I've noticed that on my Mk I on widest angle there tends to be a drop off in light towards the corners. My mk II is definitely sharper towards the edges of the frame than my mk I was, and perhaps a little bit sharper altogether.

The net cost of upgrading to a mk II will be around just £30 if selling your mk I.

I'm not sure if I'd describe the effect as vignetting - it's very gradual.

I use the term "vignetting" like Photozone.de does - to just mean any amount of light fall-off or darkening towards the corners.

Thanks for the pointer to Photozone - useful, but disappointing reviews!

Can anyone suggest a good alternative to the Pentax 18-50 that falls under £250?

Apart from the mk II version (which Photozone.de have not reviewed yet), there is no better alternative of that sort of size and weight. Can anyone suggest a good alternative to the Pentax 18-55 that falls under £250?
For larger lenses, as well as the Pentax 16-45, the Sigma 17-70mm is within your price range and gets good reviews. At £259, there is the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8.

I find their reviews quite enticing. They find something to criticise about every lens, but that's only right because no lens is perfect. Thanks for the pointer to Photozone - useful, but disappointing reviews!
You should see www.dpreview.com's review of the Pentax 16-45. That really is disappointing. They must have got a bad sample.

Sorry - I wasn't having a downer on them - I meant the review of my lens was disappointing! The reviews are excellent.

I keep reading references to a MK11 18-55 kit lens, that is apparently better than the MK1.
How do I identify if the lens that came with my K10d is the MK1 or MK11.
And realistically speaking does it really matter which one I have if the largest print size I'm going to produce is a 10"x8"
Thanks for your replies.
