Misty Blue

Took 50 f/1.2 out for a seascape outing last night.

iso400, 20s, f/22

Fine picture, by taking at night and with long exposure the sea has a cool and subtle luminous quality, nice foreground, mid point and horizon. Sorry that I don't have any critical points, it doesn't need them in my opinion!

A bit of background to the shot. It was an outing with my photo club and I arrived home late from work to a text message telling me that as the weather was fine we were going to pop out and head to the beach
My K-5 was battery drained and charger had gone missing so figured I might get a couple of shots in with a manual lens. I took along tripod and a ND8 filter.
I started off with K-5 mounted on tripod and then for some reason or other got it into my head that I wanted to do a couple of f/1.2 shots handheld and then remounted. Mistake no 1, forgot to reset iso from 400 back to 80. Mistake no 2, was that I closed down completely to f/22 and seriously in the realms of diffraction territory (or so I am told). I was down on knees with waves just about reaching me. Mistake no 3 was that I probably should have set it to portrait instead of landscape. Set the K-5 to mirror up with 3 second delay and exposed for 20 seconds to smooth out the surf. When I got home, I cropped both sides and pulled in the top and tail slightly. As taken, it had a brownish / beige hue so I lowered the white balance temp and nudged vibrancy. We are reviewing our seascapes tonight and I expect to get hammered by one or two I don't care as I have a lovely A3 printout of this hanging in the hallway.

Another learning that I got is that my K-5 has oil spots on sensor. £280 to replace

For me you could do with bit more light/detail in the foreground.

Is it oil spots or staining on the sensor? The staining is a known problem with the early K5's and was sorted under warrenty.

Stains, but unfortunately out of warranty, Bought when released in 2010. By detail in foreground you mean the main rock structure?

Someone else may know, but does the warranty run out if it's a known manufacturing fault, that you have not spotted?

Yes, it may be my monitor, but there are just hints of texture on those center rocks that I think would help being brought out, just a bit.

Are you sure they are stains, not just dust? I can see what could be a couple of dust spots. I think if you had stains you would have spotted them by now - on most K-5s they were very obvious from the get-go.

I do like the photograph btw, even though I am not a huge fan of misty long exposure water. Very restful.

Have a couple of sets of triple spots showing. Normally I live at wider than f/5.6 so have not noticed this before. Will have to get a K-3 I suppose

think the foreground rocks being a little off centre would have made this a little more interesting ..maybe ?
