Mist Trees

The fog lifted enough late yesterday afternoon for me to see a few trees.

I can never decide whether this sort of shot looks better in colour or B+W especially when colour can look so close to b+w (shot 3) so have posted both versions of 3 shots.

The colour version of 1 gives greater depth and detail - like the buzzard just entering the mist band.

The B&W version of 2 seems much more atmospheric.

Hi Gareth - They do look virtually identical but I promise the first is colour - I cropped them very slightly differently so I could tell them apart (and in my online Picasa album the first one looks much greener at the front than it does here for some reason)

Hmm the 2nd version of the 3rd shot definitely isn't in BW, although te colours are duller than the 1st version of the 3rd shot. On my screen it looks to be various shades of purple, blue, and a hint of green in the grass.

BW version of numnber 2 for me

I'd consider split-toning no.1 - keep the touch of colour in the sky, but lose the green in the grass.

What thoughton said about the last shot (3). In fact, if I import it into Lightroom, its got massive amounts of colour information. If you'll excuse my poor effort... this is with a very quick B&W conversion, a bit of level tweaking, and a 0.7 grad filter... obviously you could do a lot better by working on the original, this is just for comparision!

Not sure how i did it Tim but you are quite right - that b+w of No 3 is colour - a different colour version that I did not even know I had

Richard - the only difference i can see between your version and mine is mine is a tad darker I think

My NY resoloution sb to learn how to use lightroom - have not got a clue how to use grad filters in lightroom and as for splt toning - would not know where to begin

I prefer the first two in colour and the last in mono. The first one I like Flossies idea of destaurating the grass, but maybe leaving a little colour in it. All of them are very nice shots.

Compare the relative brightness of the sky in the top-left and the mist around the base of the right-hand tree on the two pictures. On your version, the sky is burnt-out and the tree is a sillouette - by comparison to mine where both are much softer and closer in range. Of course this is purely to taste...

Neither did I until I started to use specific features of Lightroom - but there's a huge number excellent Lightroom tutorials on the web, so everytime I get stuck with "how do I use xxx" I just google a few until I find one that's simple enough for me to understand!

The versions with the bird are eye-catching Carl - a surreal background for it.
