Misinformation about SRS

While I won't admit that I am in the SRS fan club, I have been very satisfied with the products and service I have bought - needless to say I have had equally excellent service from a number of photo outlets including the two from Leicester....

For both Nikon and Pentax I am always on the lookout for glassware, longer than 300mm, Nikkor or Pentax branded, and not at the exhorbitant prices they achieve...my eye caught an elderly 400 mm f3.5 Nikkor but wanted AF, then....

Looked at Siggie 150-500 at the weekend from my neck of the woods, thought it would answer my questions about reach for birding, while also being usable on the film cameras... Asked the price - £799..

Ok SRS do the same lens for £599 will you match?:

Got the answer back.

No.

Reason?

1) retailer has old model - we have the APO version.

Mobile internet is a bloody wonderful thing isn't it? - Simga website checked - SRS version is the same....

2) SRS have grey imports, their Sigma lens won't have the 3-year guarentee, you'll have no warranty, that's why they sell it so cheap.

Again.. mobile internet SRS website 3-year guarantee banner on the item description. MY k-5, 60-250f4, 50 f1.4 came from there - all correct. So I told the retailer that I doubted their reasoning and considered SRS to be reputable and left the store.

Now, there were new labels on the counter where they say they won't answer questions where the customer would appear to then spend their money via the internet - but we've spent a fortune there in the past year - but if they start to give what I consider to be slanderous and misleading information then they will lost future custom.

I guess this is not uncommon?

Incredible answers! I can vouch for the Sigma 150-500 from SRS. Mine is the APO version and the three year warranty from Sigma was not a problem.

Srs are great , and £50 rebate until end of feb on siggy 150-500

I'm not disputing SRS's accomplishments (but they'd do well to do a Nikon Special on that lens too:wink....

but for someone to stand there and tell me this with a straight face I found difficult to comprehend...

Regardless of what we think about UK prices the last thing we want are the independants to wipe each other out otherwise we'll all end up slaves to DigitalRev or Panamoz

Bit in bold. I used to manage the Hi-Tech department in an Independent Music Retail Shop and I find that attitude most self-damaging.

Back in the day, the Internet hadn't reached the masses, but we still had to compete with big chains and Mail Order. And is was par for the course for people to come in, try the gear, tap my product knowledge and then go and buy it cheaper mail order from a big chain.

BUT.... it was pointless trying to compete on price with the big chains as there trade discounts were much better as they bought more.

We used to do well by developing a local clientèle who valued the local service and didn't mind paying a bit extra for it. Plus we gave good trade in deals.

Putting signs on the counter like that isn't only going to send out a spiky attitude to everyone. And as for slandering other shops, unbelievably stupid thing to do. Sounds like that shop is heading for bankruptcy.

The Sigma 150-500 in a Pentax version is not an exact match for the Nikon version. Therefor the Nikon version is more expensive. I think im right in saying the pentax version cannot use the sigma converter. The Nikon version has full frame capability.
Though I do agree that they should not give slanderous information as to a retailer selling grey imports without knowing the facts.

Nah - the Sigma PKAF isn't DC it's DG.

In that case il go back to sleep.. Just realised the Pentax model is also HSM these days according to the SRS advertisement.
