I don't have such a lens but so far as I know the lens doesn't have a diaphragm so you can't adjust the aperute (f-number).
You need to set in the menu to enable use of aperture ring, it's somewhere in the custom menu and you should be able to make photos.

You can only use this lens in full manual mode.
Set the dial to M and set the aperture setting to the aperture that the mirror lens has (mostly they are f.
Then you select the shutterspeed that you want for the correct exposure.
It helps if you could post the specs of the lens (make, model, focal length, f-number, etc)

Remco are you sure about that?
If I use an older lens without auto-aperture I can't set the aperture in my camera.
You need to press the green button and then it meters the lens, you can use M and AV-mode.

You can use M or Av modes and in fact if you set any other auto mode such as Tv you will get Av anyway.
Activate the custom function Using Aperture Ring by setting it to Permitted, as already mentioned.

I think there is one, but I understand that regardless of that even a standard mirror lens of fixed aperture will need the custom function to be activated.
I presume this is because there is no contact electronically with the camera so it doesn't know a lens is attached.

Not neccessarily fixed at f8. The 400-600 was f8/f12 and I remember trying a non-Pentax lens which did have "aperture" control. Not too sure if it really did change teh aperture or switched in a ND filter. The 400-600 was supplied with several small coloured and ND flters which I have used occasionally.

Is the f8/f12 just a consequence of zooming? That is, there isn't any way you can change the aperture yourself, it just changes as you zoom?

Just a consequence of zooming. The only user adjustment is by adding the ND filters.

I found that the Tamron 500mm severely overexposes on my K10D. I have to increase the shutter speed.

I think those numbers are from the focus scale and will give an approximation of the distance between camera and subject in feet and meters, or the magnification factor (EG:1:4). if the lens has no aperture ring it'll be fixed at (probably) f8.

I have aquired a 500mm mirror lens; When I try to use it on my K20d
get an 'F' come up on the top screen and I canot access any adjustments. Please help if you can, Thank you.
