Im also in the market for a flash unit and looking forward to seeing how this thread goes. Can I ask as well if looking for a pentax flash would you be happy with the 360 or does the 540 warrant the extra expence.

The comparative merits are nicely summed up in this article. The Metz wins in a lot of areas over the 360 but doesn't feature an auto mode, nor can it be used as a controller in a wireless set up (slave only).
I've got the Pentax 360 and find it's absolutely perfect for almost everything I've ever needed to do - if I could add just one more feature it would be a swivel head but I generally find ways to work around this.

The Metz 48 is a good flash but for a little more the 58 is a lot better. Secondary reflector, more power, more option and an auto mode.
Both the 48 and 58 have a fully adjustable head so unlike the 360 it can actually be used in portrait mode.
For flashes it is Metz all the way for me for quality, price, performance and features.
