Metz 48 af-1 DOES NOT FIRE

Hey People, no idea what has happened, my metz was working fine one day, and now, no matter what mode i put it in, whether it is attached to my camera or not, it just doesn't fire! I have a K20D which was in manual mode, and my metz was in 'M' and 'TTL' mode the other day, worked fine. The flash ready light is on signifying that the flash is ready to fire, but it doesn't. The bulb isn't broken, so i am completely lost.. does anybody have a solution that may get it to flash?? would really appreciate some assistance.

I haven't updated the firmware, like I said, it worked 2 days ago, that was the last time I used the flash. It does not fire when I press the test button also... I could update the firmware, but not sure that will fix the problem, only say that because it worked fine the last time I used it during the week! Any other suggestions? lol

A daft question, but have you tried replacing the batteries?

Also, try taking out the batteries and leaving it for a few hours to fully discharge then reinsert a fresh set and try it again.

When you first turn it on can you hear the high pitch whine as it is powering up the capaciter (hold it to your ear), Have you tried firing it wirelessly ??

Put a fresh set of batteries in it and try again.

When I turn it on, the flash zooms forward then backward like normal. The ready light is green, and nothing happens when i press it. I have rechargeable batteries which aren't anywhere near low on power, and when I do press the ready test button, it sometimes displays all the icons on the lcd display... and I mean everything! all the mode and settings icons appear at once. I don't think this is broken when doing it, but I could be wrong.

You can update your flash, maybe that might help

I done the update, but still, no change... it just wont flash. Do you know if there is any function that i may have possibly pressed, which may not make the flash go off, like a safety mode / function?

Nah, it makes the high pitch noise... so it is a crazy situation. Do you know how to take off the from plastic covering the bulb?

One word of caution - flashguns use high voltage and can give you a very nasty shock. Please be careful if you are going to take it apart.

Of course. I would take the batteries out, and just want to look at the bulb to see if it has blown or not. Thanks

There's more to it than taking the batteries out. You have to make sure the capacitor is discharged.

If you do that the capacitors will still be charged. Take the batteries out and leave it for several hours before attempting to dismantle it.

As well as giving you a shock it could blow all the circuits!

Make sure you allow enough time for the capacitor to discharge as well, or you might get a mighty kick anyway!
