Memory Speed K-X

Posted 09/12/2009 - 18:27 Link
I have just ordered a Pentax k-x and want to buy an SDHC card. Is it worth getting a class 6 card or is that over-kill?
Thanks

If you use video then it's wise to use the faster ones and the extra speed is nice with big cards if they are full.

Try to ignore the cheap brands though, they somehow don't work so well with video... panasonic also seems to have problems there, at least with the K7

thanks Anvh - I guess I am hoping to find out what the max speed of transfer that the camera is capable of and then get the slowest card that is faster than the camera. That way I get the best card but without wasting money on a super fast card

The camera has a buffer so with normal shooting you will hardly notice you've a faster card and transferring from card to pc is best done without using the camera.
So if photos is all you do then card speed is not so important, with video though you need a faster card.

Also the super fast (class 6) cards aren't that more expensive then the fast (class 4) cards to be honest.

But it can be frustrating when waiting for an 8MB card to download to the PC. With faster cards reduce the waiting times ...

Go for the best you can afford.

I have a variety of cards and in practical use I couldn't tell you which one was in the camera at any given time. Even my Canon camcorder is happy with class II cards.

Ken I hesitate disagree with you but I have one card that is substantially faster than the others and I make sure that's the first one I use. It's a Lenovo (?) and the other Lenovo I have is slower oddly.

The only time it shows is when taking 5 shots in very quick succession and then wanting to preview them on the back screen. The one card is better than the others. Hardly a big deal though.

Transferring data to the PC? If it's slow then it's slow so why worry. Read the paper.

I bought a fancy pants class 6 or something and it was not as good as an older sandisk so that was money wasted.

Is Lenovo the name used by IBM? If so, it is almost certainly made by someone else - but who?

I should have said that all my cards are Sansdisk in a variety of sizes but I'm now coming round to thinking that, for me, 8gb is the optimun capacity. 36 shots on a roll of film used to sound like quite a lot!

I could be muddled about Lenovo then and they aren't to hand. I know that the Kingston 4 gig card I bought wasn't any faster than the older Sandisk cards.

I agree cards can be way too big. I now use 4 gig cards.

Lenovo is a Chinese company (a reputable one) quite well known for laptops among other things. They were already market leaders in China for laptops when they bought IBM's ThinkPad division last year, so new ThinkPads are Lenovo branded (reviews are still pretty good).

I noticed with the K7 the write time is much slower than the K20 no matter which card I use,

Jack.

So my association with IBM was reasonable. Do they make their own memory chips and devices or are they bought in? I have a device here which reads that data and there are some interesting ones around. Real cheap cards made by reputable manufacturers in several cases and in others, devices with the name of a top tier memory maker on the ouside and another top tier manufacturer in the device!

We had a topic about the K7 that video does not work with certain cards, I assume it would be the same with the KX.

Panasonic cards were the ones having a problem.
