OK, question is relevant.

The size of the images on the video imply that they were taken with a MF camera.

For the majority of of current forum members, they have not used film or MF/LF cameras.

The intention was to motivate the photographer. Producing such large size images is not a "done deal" with small format.

Now that the 645 will be available, I deemed it relevant that the link was worth a re-post.

So basically it has nothing to do with the 645D - the idea is tenuous at best - professionals have been producing images like that from 35mm since the 1960s.

Correct, nothing directly linking the 645D. Who will go out and buy a 645 film.

The "soft" (by forum response)link is in the image sizes on the video.

I do not accept this as protocol John. Large output images would primarily be the result of MF cameras.

I do not dispute the 35mm capabilities but what would you use given the task?

To be fair, not being privy to what the task was that can be rather hard to answer. I would not be surprised if the shots were medium format, or even large format, but there's nothing to indicate that they were.

Nowadays for serious huge professional images, maybe even a DSLR. I've seen some images at Focus on Imaging even from the Sigma SD14 that have been as large as those in the video.

Ultimately it depends on the use, the size required and the viewing distance.

I would use MF or LF.

I have a FF DSLR and would not use the 25M pixel version if the work required large print output.

But that is my work flow choice.

Heck, if a full sized body scanner produced a usable image?

Still sniffing for a 645D, and may NOT sell it on.

most billboards around here were shot on medium format film and scanned, or with d-slrs and interpolation software...
and at viewing distances, you can't tell which was which....
very few outfits outside the major metropolitan cities are profitable enough to justify medium or large format digital....

for the price of the 645d, I could have my vehicle tricked out and painted with custom company graphics, and it will draw more customers than a bigger camera on my tripod would....

Get real. Just how many of the users here do you you think can afford a 645D, a crop of lenses to go with it, and the return air fair to go and fetch one?

The only member here that I know has one lives in Japan, so when it breaks he can get it repaired relatively easily. The same would not be true if we followed your suggestion of flying to Japan and bringing one back to UK.

I was not intending to get into "who can afford what" discussions.

As for "when it breaks"? I would say "if".

People do go to Japan for holidays or business trips and also have colleagues or friends that work there so it's not an impossible issue. How many people regularly go to the USA on holiday and buy otherwise expensive camera kit?

Agreed, the jump on a flight specifically for the purchase in Japan of a 645D is very unlikely to happen but I do know people who fly to Japan from the Gulf to buy their Canon cameras and lenses.

I have a friend in Japan who flies here regularly to see ballet in London and generally tries not to stay overnight. She's the only person I know who does weekend breaks on the other side of the planet .

I would tend to agree with K10D here, if you're in the market for a £7000 camera which isn't available in the UK then a £500 return flight to Japan wouldn't be major deterrent.

Four or five years back, KLM had some really cheap return fares from Teesside airport (MME) to New York. The UK price of a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 meant that you could fly there, stay two nights at the Walcott Hotel (31st & 5th) and buy the lens from Adorama or B&H. After all of that, you still had the price of a night in the pub back in Blighty.
