Maximum ISO

I think you might be surprised at how bright the floodlights are. I took some photos with an ancient compact at a Premier League night game a few years ago and noise wasn't a problem. Could have done with a 500mm lens and pitchside seats though!

Thanks Tim. I will use a pitchside seat, thay are usually empty. Dont think I will get past the stewards with a 500mm though...

70-200/2.8 would be good for this
I'd also set TAv, 1/125 min and ISO floating from 100-1000... I'd also set it to overexpose by 0.3 - 0.7 so you have a very good chance of getting something seriously decent. Noise will be lower if slightly overexposed / histogram skewed to the right.

lol...Best team in the Land Tim. Manchester City. The very front row of the stand Im in, is the last to fill up. As its right on pitch level. So not a very good viewing angle for the pitch as a whole. But should be fine for close ups. Though the forecast is for rain, and the front rows are not covered by the roof. Camera may be weatherproof, but im not...
Thanks Bret.. I was toying with the thought of tav setting. Unfortunately I dont have any 2.8 lenses. (except short manual focus) Thats why I was hoping to compensate with the higher ISO, and wondering what I could get away with.

My experience is use whatever ISO you need to. If the shot is in focus and has the correct shutter speed (depending on what effect you are going for) the you can live with the noise. If it's out of focus, has camera shake and has too much blur it won't matter that there is no noise.

Sharp and noisy (grainy) will always be better than smooth and blurred.

I think noise is much more tolerable in black and white, which is probably the best option for that horrible baby blue colour. You can get away with very slow shutter speeds for Gareth Barry.

I went to a game on the weekend using the same equipment i.e. K-7 and DA 55-300. As mentioned earlier it is important to get non blurred shots and suffer a little grain than unusable blurred images. I probably could have done better but here are some examples:
1. ISO 800 f5.8 1/20 (shutter speed too low so had to up the ISO to 1600)
2. ISO 1600 f8 1/125
3. ISO 1600 f8 1/125
4. ISO 1600 f4.5 1/90
5. ISO 1600 f4.5 1/60

If I went to a game I'd be shooting characters in the crowd and other sideline incidents. And even abstracts. Stuff on the pitch does nothing for me.

So I was wondering if any one had any experience of these situations and what is really the maximun ISO you can push to. To recieve usable images. I have never been very sucessful in cleaning up large amounts of noise in Photoshop...lol
