Manfrotto or Hama tripods?

My student friend wants to get a new tripod as her other one has a leg that slips even through its locked into position. She has looked at the Hama Traveller Compact Pro http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-Traveller-Compact-Pro-Tripod/dp/B002L4ODDS/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=29L9IJONQXJIS&coliid=I1I20XOOCQMFDJ

which looks good, but isn't sure if she should go down the Manfrotto route instead.

Can you advise please?

I did have a Hama traveller for a while, I thought that it was a good piece of kit and more than capable, but I have just obtained a Manfrotto 190 Xprob and although it is not a like for like comparison, I am very impressed by the quality and construction of the Manfrotto

Best bit of advice that I could give is to get hands on a good selection to help in the decision making process.
A very happily using a K30. My wife says I have too many lenses.

Main advice .... don't skimp on tripods - made that mistake twice.

Have heard a few people say they were happy with Hama. I had one once ..it was the worst product of any sort I have ever owned.

In photography, some things can be cheap and cheerful. Unfortunately for the pocket, tripods are not amongst them. If you need a tripod, get a decent one. Really just echoing Mike's advice above.

I seem to remember that someone on this forum recommended buying the "heaviest tripod that one's wife could carry". I guess that is not helpful in your case!

FWIW I have an old Velbron VE-3 that I have no cause to complain about.

I wouldn't go for either Hama or Manfrotto for the following reasons:

- Hama are cheap but you get what you pay for, i.e. flimsy construction and won't last if used outside frequently (as I do with my tripod in all weathers!)

- Manfrotto are relatively expensive, better built but you are paying for the name

I would strongly recommend a Redsnapper tripod, superbly made, relatively inexpensive and will last for many years if looked after. it's also very flexible in terms of positioning and if mine ever broke or was lost I would not even think of looking at another brand.

I have a Hama 'Omega Premium II' tripod... It's alright but for the money and in hindsight I could have bought used and got something better...

I keep comming very close to buying a Red Snapper for the reasons listed by davidstorm above but when you 'have' a tripod it becomes difficult to justify buying another one (especially to 'her indoors')...

But if I could justify it (to her indoors) then I'd be going for: http://www.redsnapperuk.com/camera-accessories/RS-324___RSH-12_Head.html#nogo

And possibly a macro head as well (maybe)

Buy a heavy one that can stand in water or one leg on the ground and two up a wall or tree. Get a UNI-LOC. the fat end of the legs is at the bottom and they really are waterproof. The centre leg can hold a camera at either end so you can shoot at ground level. They are like a demented octopus until you get used to them and then you juust know they are THE BEST.
Sorry fellas but all the modern ones with their multi position centre legs just followed Benbo and the same people that made the Benbo then went on to make the UNI-LOC.
CHEERS Vic.

I've just had a look on ebay and they have a selection of UNI-LOC and Benbo. I have the model 1700.
CHEERS again Vic.
PS I've had mine for over 20years and it's operation is still perfect

I have never heard of a redsnapper, I don't know if Castle cameras do them. Would you say the Manfrotto MKC3-P02 Compact Photo Kit - Grey is good?

What does a Uniloc look like on a tripod?

The UNI-LOC IS a tripod. Look up the UNI-LOC site. There are some UNI-LOCs on ebay at this time. Also some Benbo, but the UNI-LOC was made by the origonal makers of the Benbo but with some new and better features. You can fit any head you want on the top. The series 1700 is the most versatile. As I said before I've had mine for about 20years now and it still works perfectly. (At this rate you'd think I worked for them) I don't!
CHEERS Vic.
